Safe luggage storage in Delhi for a traveller

Hello All,

I will be in landing in Delhi on on 5th Sep for a period of 5 days, out of which 3 will be spend in Chandigarh and Shimla before moving on to Kerala for a couple of weeks. As luck would have it, I will be carrying luggage bound for Kerala, but which I could do without carrying around while in Delhi/Shimla/Chd. If anyone could suggest the name/number/address of a safe luggage center/cloakroom etc it would really be helpful.

I am aware of the cloakroom in ND railway station, but do they only allow people with reserved train tickets to use the facility? I will not be as such using trains to commute, except for the cloakroom i suppose, if that is possible. All advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Depending on where you're staying in Delhi, your hotel may be able to look after it for you. I have used the luggage rooms at the Hotel Star Deluxe (Paharganj) and Hotel Swati Deluxe (Karol Bagh) without any problems, and both times without any locks (though the things I was leaving weren't really of value to anyone other than myself). For your own peace of mind you might like to use a lock though, and take any real valuables on the road with you.

Hello and thanks for the quick reply!

While in Delhi I will be using the hotels facilities, but when i leave Delhi on the 2nd day of my trip to Chd/Shimla, i will also check out of the hotel, and return to Delhi only to collect my baggage and move on. Hence that option will not be possible, i assume. Unless of course the hotel people agree to keep the baggage safe on goodwill terms!

What i was looking for was a storage facility not within the hotels, but like a cloakroom or luggage storage center(or whatever else it can be called!)

Thanks!

I have had the opposite of this experience with the Swati Deluxe. When my parents and I returned from doing an intrepid travel tour, we arrived in the lobby to find our luggage being kept in the open lobby, even though we had it stored before we left for the week. It would have been very easy for anyone to walk in and walk away with our bags. They made the excuse that "the luggage room was full" but it is still unexcusable for them not find a spare indoor closet or something along that line.

My Swati Deluxe experience was also troubled in other ways: When going out with friends one night, my father and mother received a phone call from reception at around midnight saying that they would have to pay for my "friends" to stay in my room. My father was quite puzzled, went to my room, and found about 5 Chinese beginning to engage in an orgy! Why the front desk would allow this to happen is rediculous. This is a pretty decently kept hotel but the service and competence is definitely lacking!

The "Swati D" also managed to find me an dead drunk driver one night without checking before calling me down to use his services.

I highly discourage staying/storing luggage at the Swati Deluxe in New Delhi...

Thanks for your inputs, i suppose the best bet is to use the railway station cloakroom. I guess Old Delhi Station(delhi jn.) has a reliable cloakroom? I hope to keep my excess luggage there for a couple of days while i go for a short tour of shimla..

Any ideas/feedback for this plan of mine? Hope it is possible. And yes, i will definitely lock my luggage, but apart from that, are there any requirements/restrictions while using the cloakroom?

Thanks in advance

Chris: Your experience far outweighs mine, I won't recommend them anymore - thanks for the heads up though
