Restaurant near Shangri La Hotel
Restaurant near Shangri La Hotel
We'd like to start our trip in India with a great Indian meal. Can anyone recommend a good restaurant to go to within walking distance (or short cab ride) of the Shangri La Hotel (19 Ashok Rd). It is hard for me to judge distances having never been to Delhi.
Thank you.
Thank you.

CP and Janpath would be your best bet with respect to being a walk away, lots of place to eat there.
When you say a good restaurant, are you specifying the type of cuisine? I suppose you want a good indian restaurant, but since you say only good food and good wine..... a little more specific might throw up some more suggestions!
the restaurant within the shangri la is actually excellent and on a saturday night they do a wonderful seafood buffet where you can get regular stuff like oysters, shrimps, sushi, salmon etc to some more exotic concoctions of curries and sauces with other fish.

Hi
Welcome to India and to Indiamike.
I'd suggest some options here. My personal favorites are Nirula's Pot Pourri and Gulati's.
Connaught Place
1. Nirula's Pot Pourri at Outer Circle, Connaught Place. Go to Pot Pourri and not regular Nirula's restaurant. There are three of them in CP. Pot pourri is on the first floor. Thats your clue to it.
N-64, Ist Floor Outer Circle Connaught Place New Delhi - 110001
2. kwality Restaurant - 7 Regal building, Connaught Place
3. Legends of India - N55 Outer Circle, Connaught Place.
Janpath
1. Karims, Indian Oil Building
Pandara Road - A little far when compared to CP but cab should not take more than 15 minutes.
1. Gulati's - Pandara Road Market
2. Havemore - Pandara Road Market

The better ones within walking distance from the hotel are :
Wine, food, ambience : Baluchi in Hotel Intercontinental, Veda and Legends of India.
Wine/food/less ambience : Kwality, York's, Embassy, United Coffee House, Gola
No ambience, no wine : Andhra Bhawan, Sarvannah Bhawan, Kake Da, Nizam's.
All of the above are walking distance from the hotel (btw, I know you are asking about Indian food but I thought I should mention that the hotel has an excellent Chinese/Japanese restaurant called 19 Oriental Avenue). Also, when I mentioned good, I go by general consensus and not purely by my personal opinion.
If taking a short cab ride, the best IMO are :
Bukhara and Dum Pukht in Maurya Sheraton, Masala Art in Taj Palace and Karim's near Jama Masjid (no wine and ambience in the last one)
Potpourri's is mixed cuisine not just Indian.

That's just a takeaway.Potpourri's is mixed cuisine not just Indian.
Yes, Pot Pourri is mixed cuisine but how does that matter? It has Indian cuisine anyway which is lip-smacking great.
A great Indian food experience (vegetarian and without alcohol) can be had at Sarnavha Bhawan. It is not a dinner place but a great lunch option. It is 3 shops towards CP from the McDonald's near the Cottage Emporium, opposite Imperial Hotel.
A short taxi ride, by Delhi standards, will take you to Defense Colony market where you will find Swagat .... and you will be very content.
