reputable travel agency in Paharganj for bus ticket to Manali?

I will be flying into Delhi from Bombay on August 1st. My plans changed and I would like to head out the next day Aug. 2nd to Manali. Will it be possible to get a ticket, and does anyone know where I should get one, in Paharganj? I'm staying at the Major's Den.

I arrive in Delhi at about 2 or 3PM so prob won't be in Paharganj til about 5ish... so i would need a place open later, early evening.

Hm that's unlikely to encourage Gelfball...

The area around Main Bazaar, especially along the busy street crossing its beginning just in front of New Delhi Railway Station, is/used to be full of them. I guess their "reputableness" varies and it may cost you a rupee or two more than it should, but instead of fretting about it I'd just get a ticket and be on your way. I'm sure they'd ply their business till well into the evening/night, as long as there are buses going.

Others may disagree or have the current lowdown. I arguably got on a bus there once that turned out to include an unannounced tourist round of some places not on my itinerary, obligatory and rushed sightseeing and all. But hey, we arrived in the end.

The best option is to take overnight Volvo buses run by Himachal Tourism. Their office is in Janpath.
Also check out Raj travels. They have a website too.

Machinanda.

Im trying to tell it how it is like , not how it should be.

I might make the same comment about any other backpacker place in the world.

Were we not on the same bus.?............... A round trip of the Delhi suburbs lasting 5 hours, then on our way, my ticket to Haridwar, as arranged with the issuing office.

Landed up in Rishikesh. The bus did not stop in Haridwar, Another circuitous route via the ghats for a puja and then to some place in the hills, and then back to Haridwar . Bus totally snagged up in traffic , so I ended up walking to town, 5km.

Yes Madam 2 by 2 A/c.bus reclining seats, top price seats. botttom service.

A/c turned off after 1 hour. That is India.

I'm sure the Tata service will be so much better. Go for Jytoirmoys suggestion

Agreed, and wasn't disagreeing (and great story ) Might as well have been the same bus from the sound of it; mine got me to Jaipur (including rushed city tour) through Amber when all I wanted was a ride to Jaipur train station to continue from there (either that, or I'd actually planned to stay in Jaipur but got fed up enough with the whole thing to just move on, I don't remember).

All passengers sitting blissfully unaware on the ride to our destination (at least as far as I could tell), halfway through some karaoke joker type fellow jumps up and happily informs us we're on a tour bus. In Amber the poor passengers were given just enough time to rush up to the fort gates and back, ample promises of elephant rides notwithstanding. I did have my first decent Indian food watching the proceedings and the elephants being bathed from the riverside dhaba. Similar in Jaipur, where we were rushed past Jantar Mantar (great!, btw) and some other places that I gave up on whilst sitting in the shade of a tree drinking chai with a local non-pushy rickshaw-wallah for quite some time, quite the educated and well-spoken guy with some insightful stories about his life and occupation. Nonetheless, it hasn't exactly given me good memories of that city. Maybe I should try again some day, it must be famous for a reason.

But of course, you're right. Just sometimes grabbing the first commercial venture that comes your way beats looking for the legit and cheaper one for hours for fear of being "ripped off" over what is really pennies. My then GF taught me this later, she was really good at getting around with minimum effort using whatever local agent came our way.

But with Jyoti's advice, better head straight there yes.

it still amazes me that people flock to Paharganj, after years of rip-offs and warnings. So many other areas to stay in Delhi, after all . . .
