Reputable Delhi Bicycle Shop to Purchase Atlas Bike

I would like to buy an Atlas bike in Delhi and take it back to the states with me on the plane, along with the mountain bike that I brought here, so I am looking for suggestions on where to purchase it. It would also be helpful if the shop could help me box up my mountain bike, and the new Atlas, so I can get them on the plane. A location fairly easy to get to the airport from would be helpful as well, although I will travel farther to get to a good shop. I would not mind looking at what kind of modern mountain bikes are available in Delhi as well. Any suggestions?

There will be lots of bicycle shops but those I know are at Malviya nagar market, Sarojini market and I once saw an area not too far off chandni chowk where lots of bike shops were located, both used and new. No exact address though, sorry. All of those are not exactly just next to the airport.

You do know that the Atlas bikes are sturdy but also extremely heavy, slow, have no gears and are virtually unadjustable? Their one redeeming quality is that they're cheap.

I do hope that you have an XXL-luggage allowance. As for mountain bikes, I don't think you want to buy those in Delhi. Best I've seen so far are Chinese imports of very dubious quality, nothing like the high-priced carbon fiber miracles that you can get for top dollar in the US or Europe.

As for the packing, don't worry, if you supply them with the material or tell them how to do it the shop will happily disassemble the bike. Just make sure that the packaging conforms to what the airline wants and double check that all parts, including nuts and bolts are put in (they wouldn't omit shipping them on purpose but you know how it is...). Errr, if you've got one of those fancy US bikes I'd rather take it apart myself if I were you.

Good luck! Perhaps a Delhi native will be able to point you to some other shops closer to the airport.

There's a cycle market on a road leading south off the Red Fort end of Chandni Chowk, where you can get used and new bikes, or get your rickshaw repaired. It's worth a visit even if you aren't buying a bike.

Check out this thread:
Where to buy mountain bike delhi

Jhandewalan, near Paharganj has a dedicated cycle wholesale market . . . Otherwise there are shops almost anywhere, Khan market has a really neat one, nearest to the airport I can think of is Mahipalpur, Vasant Kunj.

I can understand dissatisfaction with indian cycles, but that's going a bit too far, heavy they are, but they have all the standard specs save disc brakes and index shifts! But hey at a quarter of the price (around 5k) that's a steal . . .

. . . and hey tenletters where did you go biking around India? and why in heavens name would you want an Indian bike, pre history exhibition?

Jhandewalan as suggested by Trooon is the best place to get modern bikes. its a dedicated cycle market, and you can find lot of variety and brands there.

Hal is talking Esplande road (Spelling ??), if I recall correctly that is more for low end conventional cycles rather than modern ones.

Thanks for the replies.

I came to Uttarkashi by taxis, and then cycled up to Harsil. After taking a taxi to Gangotri from there I rode back to Uttarkashi. Since then I have been exploring side valleys and doing routes suggested to me by Deepender at Monal Guest House in Uttarkashi, where I have been staying. One day I went up towards Netchikita Tal and took an old abandoned forest road around a mountain and ended up back at highway 108. Another day I went up the Asa Ganga valley. Today I rode up to Barsu and checked out the waterfall. At one point I let the bike rest for a day while we climbed Manda Bhitti mountain. Another day I rode up past a village that I think is called "Sald".

I have decided to leave the custom mountain bike here with Deepender so he can use it while I am gone, and so I can have a bike here when I return without paying the $100 each way to ship it with me on the plane. This is an incredible area to explore by fat tire bike. Every ride is a very special experience, with unmatched scenery and people. I have a ten year visa and will be back soon, God willing.

I want an Atlas bike as a collectors item and coffee shop cruiser. I have not ridden one yet, but I do know that they have a very classy look. They are obviously quite sturdy since, like Indian women, they do more than their share of the work

One thing about the weight: I hope that the Atlas bike plus packaging can at least come in under 50lbs. If not it will cost even more than the $100 bike charge to get it home. Hmm.

I was wondering if you wanted a classic gearless bulky indian bike or one of the wannabe mountain bikes, but you've cleared that up . . . check out these links, you could perhaps get one exported from the company, or maybe they even have a dealership abroad, though america is unlikely i'll admit!

they should be around the 50lb mark i think, you could remove stuff like the chain and pedals and check them in separately or something to reduce a few lbs!
