Republic Day Parade - Delhi

I am arriving in Delhi on Monday morning the 26 jan and thanks to the Republic Day I have a whole day off before I start working on Tuesday.

I read somewhere that there is a Republic Day Parade in Delhi on that day and some Beating the Retreat whatever it means. Are they worth seeing? where and when? thanks

Volga,
Republic day is celebrated in New Delhi on Raj Path - the road down from Raisana Hill, i.e from the President's House down to India Gate and that is where it's best to watch it. It includes floats of different states, regiment marches, etc. Spectators sit on either side of Raj Path on the lawns. It is entertaining but LONG! I would recommend watching "Beating the Retreat" - Full Dress Rehearsal tickets are sold to tourists and ordinary citizens and takes place on the 28th. The actual event is on the 29th and tickets are hard to come by. I have watched this event once before and I must say I was thoroughly impressed. It's a show put up by the bands of the various branches of the Indian military on the quad area right before the President's House. The band play is very impressive with synchronized movements and there is a fireworks display at the end. Too bad I'll miss it as I'm getting to India on the 5th.
I highly recommend attending this event.

Enjoy your trip.

thanks Sam - will try to get to the Beating the Retreat. I probably will not be strong enough for the LONG parade after an exhausting flight to Delhi.

Hey Sggal,

This might seem like a silly question - but is there any place I can get a tape of this year's or last year's beating the retreat show?

Thanks.

A chance !

Doordarshan, India covers the event every year. They are bound to have video recordings of the last few years' event.

There's a chance that they may have tapes to sell to interested people.

No harm in checking, at the most you may be refused.

Happy Republic Day then!

And this was one of my pre-partition threads

I haven't made it to the parade on that day, but I saw pics in the newspapers the following morning and thought Beating the Retreat was striking!!! I would love to see it one day... In the meantime I have been looking for pics of Beating the Retreat but apart from some small newspaper postings could not find any. Can someone with a camera visit today's event in Delhi and do a favour to us all?? thanks
