350 from the airport is pretty fair. Plus, EasyCabs will charge you less if you live closer.
I know I pay 'foreigner rates' but here's what I normally pay for autos: Short rides (get in auto because I don't feel like walking but I could walk if I really wanted to) - 25-30 Rs Vasant Kunj - Vasant Vihar Priya - 45-50 Rs (I walk away from anyone who wants to charge me over 50) Return trip from above - 50-60 Rs (they can find fares easily at Priya) Vasant Kunj - Sarojini Nagar or Khan Market - 90-120 Rs depending on if I feel like haggling Vasant Kunj - Connaught Place - 150-200 Rs (low if I feel like haggling) N.B. New Delhi Rail Station to Vasant Kunj is 190 Rs in prepaid auto. You will pay more if you don't speak Hindi, if you're carrying lots of bags, or if he's the only auto driver around, unless you're really good with bargaining. And if you don't know the route, beware using the meter! They will take you the Longest Route Possible. Best to find out the price ahead of time and pay them at the end. Only twice have I had situations where the guy wanted more money at the end of the ride. The first time the ride was 150 Rs and he "didn't have change" .. so I just let it go (I would never do this now and always carry some 10s or 50s) .. the second time the ride was 50 Rs and he asked me for 120 and I made a scene yelling in a mix of English and bad Hindi and walked away after I'd given him the 50 he agreed on. There's a number you can call too if auto drivers try to cheat you, but I don't remember what it is now. This is the one thing I REALLY don't like about India - just because my skin is white, people assume I will happily pay them 3-4x what locals will pay. I *am* a local earning in rupees. I just look different. But stereotypes are hard to break. > ![]() |

I think what shashank was trying to say is that a judgement of what is or isn't fair doesn't really enter into it because you're not having to determine what a high or low price might be - its fixed and that's just what it is. You're well within your rights to feel ripped off by a fixed price as well - but at least with a fixed price you're not having to go through a bargaining process.

you still have not got the concept of it, I guess Brownboy has tried to explain it. Its a fixed price for one and all, no haggling OR bargaining at pre-paid booths. The booth is operated by Delhi police.

You dont know how tiring a haggling process can be , and to add on to BB's point, even if you wanted , you MIGHT NOT be able to figure what price is fine and what is not..

Will it be wise for hire a raio cab for the following purpose?
Hi Shashank, Thanks for opening such an useful thread. In fact I was sending mails to Dilliwala for his help on procuring cab at Delhi. I am arriving NZM by Utkal Express at around 12 from Haridwar. Want to keep the cab till 4.00 and take a drop en-route Karim's and Chandni Chawk to NDLS. Also would keep our luggage inside the cab while will be at market place or Karims. Please help as to whom should we approach. ![]() Last edited by Dilliwala : Nov 14th, 2008 at 15:29. Reason: merge posts |

Thanks Shashank for your prompt response. I have read your starting thread. There you mentioned Rs 15 per KM. I am just asking you hypothetically, what would be the approx. cost for 4 hours holding of this type of cab. Is there any provision KM vs. Hour, like other hired car.

yes, Somnath, they do have some provision for that, and I guess I did mentioned that somewhere on the thread, not 100% sure though. I guess it was around Rs.100 an hour..
