Radio Cabs / Dial-a-Cab in Delhi

You are right and the charges vary from city to city. Charges are applicable for phone bookings but not for net bookings or hailing the cab on the road.

The driver adds the amount to the fare meter at the end of the journey when closing the clock on it. Just keep your eyes on the meter next time. You can read about the "convenience charge" at http://www.merucabs.com/customer-support/faqs.php Radio Cabs like Easy Cabs and Meru Cabs are fairly reliable services 24 hours a day. Try keeping atleast half an hour of buffer when giving out your pick-up time to the cab, just as a safeguard.

I think calling a Radio cab works out to be cheaper than the local taxi stand cab. The taxi stand guy charges us Rs.500/- for a trip to the Airport, which is approximately 17kilometes from my house (Saket). Whereas calling a Radiocab, even at their highest rate of Rs.20/Km would work out to Rs.340/-. Next time I'm calling a Radio cab to go anywhere!

Yep they have worked out cheaper for me in most cases as well plus i prefer the radio cabs additionally owing to the condition of the car themselves. The local guys still provide either an ambassador or a maruti van most of the time without an AC , but someone like Meru would have the AC and atleast i have almost always got a sedan - indigo / manza which is much more comfortable.

Delhi cabs
There are many Rs 10/- radio cab operators that have comeup in Delhi. Quick Cabs says it has 1,000 cabs. I am just suprised with that number. I dont even think Meru or Easy has so many cabs in Delhi & NCR. Also, has Mega cabs gone down of late. Not seeing so many Mega cabs off-late. Any thoughts about it?
I am thinking of booking a radio taxi online to pick us up from Delhi airport. How long should I leave between the scheduled landing of the plane and the taxi booking, and if the plane is delayed will I be charged waiting time?
Cab from Delhi
We will be reaching IGIA Terminal 1D at around 1 PM and need to catch the bus to Manali at 6:30 PM from Cannaught Place. In these 4-5 hours, we wanted to visit National Rail Museum at Chanakyapuri.
This is my first visit to Delhi. Could you please tell if I can avail some half-day sightseeing package from the domestic terminal itself or if I need to book a cab and ask him to pick me up at the airport. I'm more concerned about the safety of the luggage, so I need to go with some reliable cab company.

Hi Sid
I have just returned from our first visit to India and the cab situation at IGI airport is much easier than I expected. We arrived at 11.15pm and we had no difficulty at all fining a cab. There are booths in the airport both for prepaid taxi's and for radio taxi's such as mega cabs and meru cabs. You should have no difficulty in arrangin whatever you want either at the booths or directly with the driver. One word of caution though, we took a prepaid taxi from the police booth. You are assigned to a cab which you have not seen. We were assigned to one of the worst looking taxi's in Delhi, which then broke down half way to our hotel. After some phone calls ans some conversations with other drivers some money changed hands and we were taken to our hotel in a van that was definately not a taxi. I do not know if the driver and the taxi driver knew each other in some way or if it was just a passing motorist. The taxi's operated by mega cabs and meru cabs appear to be in much better condition and when we used one they seemed much better so for the journey you are considering you would probably be better off taking one of hte radio taxis.

Thanks Elaine. We came back from Delhi and had a very good experience with Megacabs. We took the 4 hours, 40 Kms package from the airport before catching our bus to Manali (INR 800 + 25 for booking on phone) and the cab arrived domestic 1D terminal in 10 mins. The cab was clean, comfortable, safe (with GPS too) and the driver was a funny guy making jokes on politicians in Delhi.
However while returning, we took a 8 hours, 80 Kms package with a local travel agency who we had negotiated for 900 bucks. We were staying in Karol Bagh and the taxi came from a far away place called Faridabad (34 Kms from Karol Bagh). After using the taxi for 50 Kms visiting some places in Delhi, the fare turned out to be 1700 bucks (garage to garage). Lots of arguments followed and somehow we settled for 1200.
Megacabs seemed to be highly professional and worth the price they are asking for.

Easy Cabs - Please don't use!
Easy Cabs has the worst service. They confirm the booking and expect the customer to follow up with the driver, the drivers cancel at the last moment and the call center has no clue. When you ask them to arrange an alternate cab, they refuse straightaway. Apparently, even the senior executives in the office cannot resolve such issues. They just give some gyan on how important customers are to them.
Whatevery you do, please do NOT use Easy Cabs!

Will any of these services work with you if you don't have a local number? I have my American cellphone with me, and taxi drivers and guides have been able to call me on it, but some services will not work with me because I was not able to obtain a Delhi number due to how short my trip is.
