Then you may want to alert your indian consulate, they are putting November 12th on their website never mind the fact that I heard it is on November the 5th from a friend in Delhi(i mean not that I don't trust the darling but you could see how a gal can become a tad bit confused by all of this yah? )

Indian consulate did not update their website since 2004! Dunno about your friend...probably their community celebrates it on the 5th.

November 1 2005 it is.

Nothing much... I shall clean up the house and light some oil lamps. I hate crackers anyway. One thing is certain...I am going to cook something wonderful on that day. Probably buy something new for the home...curtains? maybe a nice carpet.

One more on my plan...I shall visit the Parthasarathy Temple in Triplicane on that day.

In Karnataka, Deepavali is traditionally celebrated on Oct 31st and Nov 2nd. Oct 31st is Naraka Chaturdashi, the day that Lord Krishna killed the demon Narakasura. In the north, Deepavali is celebrated on the new moon day( amavasya) as Lakshmi Pooja and new year. In karnataka, it is celebrated on the day prior to new moon day( 14th day of second half of the 7th lunar month Ashwija), and the day after ( 1st day of next lunar month, 8th month Karthika ). For the entire month of Karthika in Karnataka, in the evening, lamps are lighted and kept near the front and back doors, and near Tulsi plants.

In Karnataka, you usually have holidays on Naraka Chaturdashi and Bali Padyami days. However, since Nov 1st is Kannada Rajyotsava ( the day that Karnataka state was formed), it is also a holiday every year, and this year Lakshmi pooja day too falls on this day.

Thank you for your reply. That sounds like a nice way to spend the day. What is the Parthasarathy Temple like? I haven't heard of it.

..... .Expats in the west, (unless you are Jewish) like good children, so as not to be a burden to their newly adopted western countries, celebrate Diwali on the nearest week-end (not on the day Diwali falls, if its a week-day).

Ottawa, Canada crowd is celebrating Diwali with a dinner this year at the Parliament Bldg, on Saturday November 5, 2005, not on Diwali Day, Tuesday Nov 1.

Hmmm...never been to the temple myself though ive been living in Chennai for more than a year. All I know about it is that it is an 8th century Vaishnava temple and is the best place to observe Srivaishnava traditions in Chennai.

I was born into a Srivaishnava family, but had never bothered about the ways of the Sri Vaishnava. Now I am interested in knowing my own roots and would like to discover the traditions, customs and practices of the sect.

I leave an oil lamp or a candle burning all night. I suppose I don't really think of the Ram's return to his throne, but it is the Festival of Lights, and I briefly [not being anything of a yogi] meditate on light coming into the lives of those who feel that there lives are dark or lacking in hope.

I don't know where I shall be this year. Not in my home of last 15 years any longer, nor yet in my new Chennai home...
