Public transport from the airport in Delhi to near the train station.

Is there a bus going that way?
If so, would the bus fares for 2 adults and a child actually cost less than a taxi would?

We are arriving at the civilised time of midday, so taking public transpost if there is any should be safe enough.

I do not know if the fares below are accurate, but here's what I picked up from the web:

"The EATS (Ex Serviceman's Airlink Transport Service) Buses run to ISBT (Inter State Bus Terminal) near Kashmiri Gate, Connaught Place, Delhi Train Station and many hotels in the city centre for INR 50. Buses run according to flight schedules, and depart from both terminals. Timings: Buses leave Terminal II for the city every 60 mins 0010-2310 every hour of the day and night. Cost: INR 50 per adult, INR 25 per child below 12 years. INR 25 for heavy luggage. Contact: Tel 2331 6530."

Two adults plus a child is Rs. 125. With 2-3 bags, it should be Rs. 200. It ought to be cheaper than the taxi. We did it the last time and was a nice experience. Being of Indian origin, it wasn't new experience to me - but my wife (a German) liked it over cabs.

It does drop you off on the 'wrong' side of the train station, and on the road (instead of right in front of the train station). The walk to the train station is no more than 40-50 meters. The side is wrong only if you need to pick up the ticket etc. - as those facilities are on the other side. If you have the tickets, it might even be the less crowded side to approach the train station from.

As an aside, we got there in need of lunch - and ended up eating at the modest local eatery in front. We remember that experience more fondly than the pretentious meals we had at various 5-star places in Delhi!

All the best!

Thanks very much Kamalik

This site really is tops for getting information about India. I am getting the most incredible detail in answer to my questions. Usually when I travel I learn these things by trial and error. Certainly a bonus to be able to find all this on the internet.

Can we buy the tickets on the bus, or do we need to buy them some place before boarding? Do we need to have the exact fare or will they give change?

Mell,

You are welcome!

We definitely bought the tickets on the bus. I'd recommend that. It was not ultra easy to find the bus, and when we found it - we were not sure if it was going any time soon, and were starting to doubt the experiment. But, then in the typical Indian fashion - the sleeping driver suddenly came to life, the conductor materialized from nowhere and we were moving in 10 minutes! So, it might be an early acclimatization to India for your family, but more fun than the taxi experience. Furthermore, with the chaos on the Indian roads, this is the safest transportation going outside of a tank

Your challenge will be finding the bus. You might have to ask around. Others might have more pointers. I did have the luxury of speaking Hindi!

One final point: I hope you are going to the New Delhi railway station - as that is where the bus goes. If you need Old Delhi station, it is perhaps not a good idea.

PS: I hope you realize that the savings from using the bus are minimal, and the taxi is more convenient. We'd personally again use the bus for the experience, but it's not everyone's cup of tea!

We are going to the train station near Paharganj. Is that the one that the bus goes to?

Mell,

Check out the New Delhi railway station on the google map. Here's the link. The bus leaves you on the Ajmeri gate side. On the map, either the Bhavbhuti Marg or the Vivekanand Road. The train station ought to be on your left (from the direction the bus is traveling). I say this as a bunch of rickshaw pullers and hotel touts descend on you as you exit the bus, and it can be unnerving for the first time visitors.

All the best!

I am not a first time visitor to India, but I am sure I will be confused and disorientated all over again on this visit.

How much should a rickshaw for a half or a kilometer cost? My 8 year old daughter loved rickshaws when we were in Thiland. We might take one to our hotel from the train station. She would love that.

Someone else might need to answer that. I am not up on the rickshaw rates.

Once your nose is pointed in the right direction, the distance is quite small. So, the rickshaw ought to be cheap. Make sure the person does not think that they need to take you to the pahar ganj side / entrance (long ride) - as that is the most common usage.

Anyway, remember the fortune you are saving by traveling on the bus

Enjoy!

Cool! Thanks Kmalik We will go to the side of the train station which is in the direction we are going and then find out if the rickshaw guys will give us a decent price. If they wont, then we will walk. If we start walking, that will probalby bring the price down anyway.

puchoo -

Are you sure? I have walked from the drop off point off the EATS bus to the New Delhi train station in barely 5 minutes - rolling two full size suitcases. Hence my guess at 50 meters.

I am sorry. Reviewing the thread, it seems I was the one who was mistaken. As I had been responding in the context of taking the EATS bus to the NLDS - and the short walk involved at the end for which the rickshaw pullers approach you, that's what I was thinking of. Looking back, I missed the bit about the hotel to train station.

Hello again

I am now back from India.

Taking the bus was very easy. You just have to go outside the airport and ask somebody where the green bus to the city goes from. It costs 50 rupees for adults and at least goes to the New Delhi railway station. That is where I got out. They did not charge us for bags. It was half price for my 8 year old daugher.
