Come out from Nizamuddin side and it's on your left. This is run by Delhi Traffic police.

At Sarai Kale Khan Side it's on your right !

And good luck to you if the counter's closed or indeed, if it's open, to get a cab willing to take you at the official rate in the first place. Certainly if you arrive at night they'll fleece you, I was there some weeks ago and every single autowalla wanted 150 Rs for a 5 km drive.

Generally I have seen policeman arranging auto for you even if the automan is unwilling. I have never had any problem even around midnight (Dehradun-Delhi Shatabdi) also.

Are things differenet for Western tourists ?

When I got there (nizamuddin side) around 10:30 PM the counter was closed and no policeman in sight. I asked in hindi to the autowallas but they stuck to the 150 Rs mantra even though I pointed out that Jor Bagh was just 5 km away. Apparently that's the price they all want from foreigners. Anyway, after a lot of cursing I found one who approached me and we settled on 80 Rs (still extortionate of course but I didn't want to spend the night there). I had the impression he was actually afraid the others would find out he'd undercut them. I found nizamuddin the worst station for this, never have hassles like that when arriving at NDLS or old delhi station.

Since you are not a tourist but live at Delhi, why not lodge a complaint about the closed Pre Paid Booth with Delhi Traffic Police. I think you can do it online too.

Delhiwala, in principle you're right and I should complain, were it not that I think it would just be a monumental waste of time. But of course if everybody reasons that way nothing will ever change. Will see if I can dig up this online complaint page.

I did not find any problem at Nizamuddin pre-paid auto center. Police men were very active and helpful but it was 12 noon. My destination was Karims which was not even 2KM. If I am not wrong I paid at the counter not more than Rs.20/-. One auto refused to go but on intervention of policemen, he took us to the destination. On arrival I paid him tips and he was very happy as there were too many luggages I was carrying.

Hi all:

I'm a 47 year old American woman of European descent, traveling alone in India.

I was a Nizamuddin yesterday (21 April) and as I came down the steps the taxi drivers all shouted at me,

"Taxi madam? Go by meter!"

"No pre-paid taxi madam, only pre-paid rickshaw."

I ignored them and walked towards where I thought the pre-paid taxi counter should be from reading this thread. I found the pre-paid auto rickshaw counter and the guys inside agreed with the taxi drivers that there is no pre-paid taxi at Nizamuddin. They said only at New Delhi station.

So is there a pre-paid taxi counter somewhere? Or only pre-paid rickshaw like I was told?

The counter guys at the prepaid rickshaw place tried to assure me that the taxi meter wasn't too expensive. But when I asked, "How do I know they don't drive me around in circles to run up the fare?" the guys inside the booth kind of gave a smirk as if to say, "yup".

I asked the taxi guys how much to get to the domestic airport and they quoted me 450 INR. I told them that was ridiculous because I had paid 280 for a pre-paid taxi from the Delhi airport to Nizamuddin the day before. After a bit one taxi driver said 350, and finally a taxi driver said 300. So I went with him.

Carol Tiger,

Welcome to IndiaMike...

As per Delhi Police Website, they still have a Pre Paid Taxi Booth at H. Nizamuddin Station.

I have not taken taxi from there, as I mostly take Autos. Next time I am there, I'll check this out, as the taxi guys there may be bluffing.
