Oh God !! How did I miss this one.

Please read my comment quoted by you again. It clearly says that info seems to be correct 'otherwise;' the rates are Rs.15 per km. And the easy cab counter at the airport IS a prepaid service (Fixed rate) as well, and they always tend to be expensive then proper metered service.

If your hotel arranges a pick up for a correct price (around 400 rupees maximum which takes into account the driver's waiting time) then there will be no headache. Apart from that take one of the prepaid cabs as outlined in the link Dilliwalla has put here for you, Bonitag or else go to the Delhi Tourism Development Corp. counter and book a car there - this is a booth inside the airport after you come out of immigration area. Their cars are good, and the drivers reliable. I have several times used their cars, and not been 'taken for a ride.'

Thank you Aishah,

I will use the Easy Cab service since they have a counter in the airport and most people seem to like their services.

My hotel does offer airprot pick up, but they are asking Rs. 2000, from the international airport to East Nizzamuddin near Humayun's Tomb (too much I think), so Easy Cab will be.

Yes, I vaguely remember your post here before it got moved, but wasn't sure if it was the hotel charging this. That's definitely a 'scam'! Easy Cab should be fine - it's all on the meter and everything is kosher.

shash, I am not going to dredge up stuff that is almost 1 and half years old - suffice to say I had read the posts correctly then, and again yesterday.
If you still want to thrash this out, let's take it indoors.

Wrestling? Not a chance - I'll lose!

Er, back to topic -

Bonita - if you're happier with Easy Cab that's fine, otherwise just want to add that there really isn't cause for concern with the govt-run prepaid cabs, just follow the few basic tips given in both threads.
DTDC is also govt-run, no idea of their rates though compared to the others.

Agree with other members that 2000 bucks is a total rip-off and shud not be used/encouraged at any cost. Also for moving around in the city, you're better off calling a radio-cab than using the hotel's car.

Just to be clear - that fare-calculator is for metered city taxis, and not the Airport Prepaid ones.

Transfer from IGI to Delhi Hotel

In December, my wife and I will arrive at IGI at 1:30 a.m. and have a confirmed reservation at the Crowne Plaza Delhi Hotel in the New Friends Colony. The hotel wants 2200RS to send a car to pick us up. I have internet quotes from local tour companies that range from 500RS to 1700RS. I'm wary of the pre-paid cabs after reading many of the posts on this thread as well as others. I want a reliable, safe, comfortable, and hassle-free transfer from the airport to my hotel. I don't want to be fleeced, but I'm willing to pay a fair price for high quality service. What do you suggest? Bob

Hi Bob,

There can be some real headaches but they are more often than not, few and far between.

Rs.2200 is a rip-off in no uncertain terms.

Go to the New Delhi Police Booth and get a pre-paid ticket. You show the ticket just before you leave the airport & give it to the driver when you get to your hotel (not before). This is what they get paid by (ie. giving it to the police after you are deposited at your hotel).

Cheers
Zoltan

I arrived in Delhi last night and wanted to post this info while it's fresh in my mind.

It was at 1am, so night rates.

EasyCabs quoted me 830Rs to Paharganj Main Bazaar. PrePaid Taxi (from the DTP stand) was 320Rs. Quite a difference! I took the prepaid one, no problem at all.

The booths for both are right in front of you after you pass through customs.

thanks Julia for posting your experience! I understand your concern about the price difference, but I have read on LP and on the net that a few years back a lady got in big troubles with some pre-paid cab drivers and this scared me a lot (I have already traveled India alone in the past). I'm sure now they are checked by authorities and that was a single case as it could happen anywhere, but I sometimes prefer to pay 3 times the price rather than getting in troubles especially when it's late at night and you are tired... anyway, I had planned a complimentary pick up from a hotel, but I heard that in some cases they don't show up... I'm still deciding what to do!

Hi holikarang and welcome to indiamike!

Yes I had tthe same concerns after I read that in the LP - I was arriving on my own too, and late at night.
One thing that might put yor mind at rest is that when you book the taxi they take your name and this appears on the printed slip you are given. Then when you are leaving the airport in the taxi there is a police post where they check the slip and note down the driver's name and registration, your name and destination. So he knows that he's logged!
(Make sure you get the slip back and only hand it over at your destination. In my case the policeman handed it back directly to me in the back seat)

To be honest I can't see that the risk, though very very small wouldn't be the same in a radiocab.

Anyway I hope it all works out fine for you.
Julia

PS. One other thing. The driver started asking me my name etc but I decided I wasn't doing any chitchat, so I put on my 'hard face' and told him I was very tired and didn't want any music either!

Hi Julia! Yes I've got informed about the procedure, thanks for confirming! What I have understood is that the radiocab fellows are recruited from the company and they check their reliability, while the pre-paid taxi guys are less paid and hope for commissions from hotels... but this is only my guess (there is a whole thread about this on the forum actually). Anyway, as you said, the problems that had occurred to that lady could happen with anyone anywhere, it's not a matter of who and where probably.

From my side, since I finally decided to rent a room with a family in Delhi (I'll stay there for quite some time) I have cancelled my hotel and I'll have a car picking me up arranged by my friends. I will let you know how it went when I'm there!
