There are taxi stands where you pay the attendant who will then give you a slip/receipt which you show to the driver. But make sure you hang on to it to avoid any problems with proof of payment.
I should probably add that the prices should be listed for the different locations. |

Which airport?
But some have a prepaid window before you leave the airport. Maybe all do. But for sure Mumbai has one. Not sure about Delhi as it's been 10 years since I was there. And I don't think I used one there anyways. |

All airports where I arrived, there was a prepaid booth. You'll have to have an idea of where you're going for them to calculate the fare to your destination. Just ensure you catch the correct taxi and DON'T hand over your prepaid voucher until you're positive the voucher and the taxi match up.

Both times I have gotten a prepaid taxi (in Calcutta), the driver told me some reason that we needed to pay more. Do not agree. Both times I found out that he was just making something up. If there is an issue, call the number on the taxi slip.

Thanks for the info. So I'll just proceed to the prepaid booth, tell them the destination/hotel name, pay, and they'll tell me which taxi to take?

Hi there!
We are booked at hotel B Nineteen (exact address: B-19 Nizamuddin East New Delhi-110013), they offered us taxi pick up for Rs. 2000, I think that's A LOT, since it cost me about the same from my apartment in NYC to JFK airport! Can someone please enlight me as far as taxi fares from Delhi International Airport to Nizamuddin East? If this is the going rate, great! But if not... I should have mentioned that we land at 1:25 AM

Wow, Rs 2000. You could get 2 days driving around Delhi for that. Hotels often charge a premium, but that's crazy.
IGI Airport to Nizzamudin Station is about Rs 250 at night, according to this site: http://delhigovt.nic.in/autofares/Transport_taxi.asp |

Thanks Hal2004!
That's what I thought... This will be our first time in India and we really would prefer not to have to deal with the old airport-taxi scam "I can't find your hotel; I know a better place..." Are there any private taxi services for airport pick up? Here I can take a "yellow cab" or call a private company to pick me up, the difference in price is not that big. Anything like this in Delhi? It seems like the pre-paid government taxis can be a nightmare and the hotel taxis a rip-off... ![]() |

There's cab services like Meru or Easycabs that will charge you a fixed rate per km. New cars, air conditioned, clean and comfy. Meru has a website and you can book online.
In Hyderabad these sorts of "radio taxis" line up at the airport, but it's a brand spanking new facility. Getting a cab at Delhi is a bit more of a fight. I took a prepaid cab in Delhi and there was no issue with him diverting to another hotel. He took me where he was paid to go. Had some trouble finding it, but that's par for the course. Make sure you print a small map and have the address at hand. |

Thanks for the information about Meru and Easycabs, I will check their rates and try to arrange a pick up. I just don't want too much hassle at 1:30am, after almost 20-hours of traveling.
Thank you so much! |

Thank you Dilliwala!
I just read your post and noted the phone numbers! Still, I am so intimidated by the whole thing, it seems like the most stressful part of visiting Delhi is getting from the airport to your desired hotel, at a fair rate. Not happy! ![]() |
