Ah, this old thread is revived, just as I prepare to venture to Delhi again.

I learned something valuable in Delhi; that even with all my Buddhist experience, the words that come to my lips when I'm in abject anger are "Jesus F-ing Christ." And after I shouted those words, the shoeshine man ran away, terrified.

Geezus that was an absolute bullseye, freenote. Although I think it's better for 'the industry' in whole, if the predator can get some or most of the blob onto/into the prey's shoestrings. This almost always requires the purchase of a new lace & raises the BP (& utterance of 4-letter words) of the prey exponentially.
We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. ~

I was reading this story today and suddenly it reminded me of this thread. This is disgusting scam.

To the consternation of passers-by, I grabbed the man by one shoulder and cleaned my shoe on his trousers.

That's a good article from the BBC. Thanks

I'm glad I read up on this scam. Call me evil if you want, but I'd simply wait for the 2nd person to offer to clean my boots before dipping my fingers into the pigeon/cow shit and wiping it on his shirt "Give this to your friend". Sorted. Oh And I'd probably be carrying those dettol tissue wipes anyway 'for those little accidents'

PS Doh! I didn't realise I've resuscitated a thread from 10 moths ago, sorry

Poo on the shoe

I have heard about this scam for years around Connaught Place and after many visits without it happening to me was almost feeling left out.

I was always curious to see how they could do it without the victim.

Well, that was remedied on the last visit and I am still none the wiser as to exactly how it was done. It happened in the underpass near Palika Bazaar, not crowded, and suddenly the shoeshine guy just cam by and happened to point out the big blob on the shoe that he would clean. A friendly passerby stopped and suggested that we pay him 200 rupees.

I got the guy to clean the shoe, whilst I pretended to seriously consider the price, then once he had finished and was waiting for the money briskly walked off giving him nothing.

I once heard of someone who got out a 10 rupee note and used that to wipe the shoe himself then screwed it up and pushed it inot the hand of the shoe shine person. That shocked him, and was amusing for the victim

Tit for tat... perhaps others can learn

I read that they use a henna tube for it. Am I naive to believe?

Yes ... but when the 'content' soils your laces & the other 'players' of this charade point & tell you in public that you have some kind of 'shit' on your shoe & then a crowd starts to gather & gawk & unless somebody 'cut the cheese' at the same time - even smells like poop ,,,,,, it's all 'theatre of the mind' & what the hell difference does the actually forensic analysis of the 'special sauce' have at that point?

They've already, at the very least, succeeded in ruining your laces, making you late & much less presentable with their selfish, conniving, physical bumbardment.

I'll tell you one thing - I'll be ready & waiting for the little pircks .... the next time. I hope .......

It happened to my brother on my first visit to India. I grabbed the kid who pointed it out and my brother wiped it on his pants legs. Clearly he was not amused.
