Poi Spinning

Does anyone know of any poi lessons in Delhi? Maybe the New Zealand embassy has something..there are a lot of expats on this site so was wondering if someone has an idea. Thanks!

I think you might be hard pressed to find anyone who can teach poi at the NZ high commission. A friendly bunch, but not a single maori amongst them.

Just out of curiosity - are you simply interested to learn or are you thinking of doing a solo performance?

Fire Spinning is an advanced form of that apparently. If you're good enough with the poi, you can move on to that.

I realize that the NZ embassy would be lacking in Maori elements, but loads of embassies here have cultural classes..like I remember the Spanish embassy used to have these salsa classes and Cuban had cigar appreciation ones. But poi does not have that kind of mass appeal probably.
I'm a dancer so would use it in a performance, it's such a graceful technique..

If anyone were to set maori poi on fire - it would be by accident (although for many of our cousins further north in the pacific - its definitely a part of their kawa).

Sorry - the NZ high commission is a tiny operation and they don't run any cultural programmes as such. There's nothing else that comes to mind unfortunately.

I learnt to do the fire poi a few years ago. But one of them let go and went flying over onto the neighbour's roof...I moved right on to origami.

lol - new age poi! Had to happen eventually (wonder if there's a new age patu and new age taiaha to go with it). Guess I better stow my traditional piupiu then.

Sorry to prove otherwise - but maori use of the maori poi is alive and well - and thriving. It just gets bigger every year - but that's ok. We're pretty happy with the way we've doing our kapahaka (including the poi) - feel free to set yours on fire.

Yep, the maori use of poi is definately alive and well in NZ. And long may it do so. Kapahaka is awesome. - it's a beautiful thing to behold. It always sends shivers up my spine to watch and listen to it - something I could never tire of.

Don't stow your piupiu just yet mate. And your patu and taiaha could come in useful if you go to Agra. Just imagine the touts' faces....
