I know that there are quite a few places for about $65/night, but these places are a little too extravagant for me. I'm looking to pay about half this amount, because my needs are simple: I just need a fast/reliable internet connection which will allow me to make outbound calls from my voice-over-IP phone which I will bring from the states.
Here is what I'm looking for: 1. A flat for 2-4 weeks in the New Delhi area, which *MUST* have a fast/reliable internect connection. 2. It must be a decent place which is accessible to the city. 3. Everything else is icing on the cake, and although I don't mind living in a nice, I don't care to live in a 3-bed room place for $65/night. This is something that I simply won't need, unless I have a travel partner. 4. The place must be safe, clean, and it should be attractive to educated people and foreign-types. 5. It should be less than $40/night. Please email responses to this board, or call me at 781.715.0563. Last edited by machadinha : Nov 15th, 2007 at 07:12. Reason: adjusted title |

Hi,
We're currently in Delhi and are staying in the Tibetan colony. There are lots of hotels, rooms are about 300 rupees a night and the internet is blinding fast (by indian standards anyway!) Its a couple of kilometers north of old delhi railway station, but its 10 minutes away from a metro stop. The accomodation is clean with hot showers but otherwise fairly basic, but at that price you can't really argue. The best bit is you get no hassle whatsoever as Tibetan people are so laid back. Its like taking a break from Delhi! Cheers Iain and Helen |

Thanks for your speedy reply! From your experience, is the internet fast/reliable enough voice-over IP telephones? That's my #1 requirement. Basically, I DON'T MIND SPENDING A $50 PREMIUM PER NIGHT (IN ADDITION TO THE HOTEL'S FARE) FOR FAST/RELIABLE INTERNET.

Majnu ka Tilla
Majnu ka Tilla is a compact Tibetan settlement and the place of departure and arrival for Dharamsala, the home of the Tibetan Government in Exile and the Dalai Lama. Stay here if you have an interest in Tibetan culture, politics and religion, or if you need something quieter (and just slightly more expensive) than Paharganj. An auto-rickshaw from New Delhi train station should cost around Rs50 (use the prepaid stand). The Vidhan Sabha metro station is also nearby and popular - from there cycle-rickshaws charge Rs 15 and take about 5 minutes. Atala: Thanks for your reply. I'm actually doing my homework on this area, and I'm trying to find a good hotel here. Actually, when I say "good", I really mean "FAST/RELIABLE INTERNET." I talked to a couple of these hotels, and they only have an internet cafe which closes at 11:00 PM IST. I need my own internet for my voice-over-IP phone from 6:00 PM - 3:00 AM IST. Does the place that you reccomend have this? |

Dharamsala is not anywhere close to Delhi...

I doubt that they have fast internet there, but it's a very charming area, indeed. |

Hello,
Could you tell me about the internet connection over there? It's speed, availability, reliability, and compatibility with SKYPE/VONAGE? |

ok....chances are that unless you stay in either a 4 maybe 5 star hotel - getting a large, reliable enough internet connection that supports skype may be difficult. Now I say difficult (not impossible) as there are plenty of skype users already - but consistent reliability across the board is problem.
Consumer based DSL connections are limited to mostly to 2meg and less - if your lucky. Yes the providers here do have ADSL2 DSLAMs (digital subscriber line access multiplexor) - but unless there happens to be fibre to the node, the service will be rate limited to 2meg - then its a case of how good the copper is (don't hold your breath). So if you're a smaller hotel with a standard DSL connection - then you're sharing a single 2meg connection (if you can get 2meg)with the rest of the hotel. There are some providers here that provide wireless and cable connections - which will get you over the 2meg mark. The larger 4 and 5 star hotels use this and throughput is fairly good(one hotel I stayed at got their access via cable - giving them a 4meg throughput). They then pumped it around the hotel via 802.11g - completely open, unencrypted! During the evening you could get a throughput of 2-300 kbits. The other thing to do is to check out the wifi hotspot thread... Wifi Hotspots In India ~ Please Add To The List can't comment on the throughput - but IHMO cable and wireless connections are probably a most reliable option for throughput then using a hotel the relies solely on DSL. good luck. |

Hey
Ull need to zoom in on a 3-5 star category hotel. The net is not available freely in low budget hotels in delhi and more often than not you will be directed to a local cyber cafe. Since the speeds you are looking for are high (VOIP etc) i would suggest you combine the 40 odd dollars u are willing to pay for the room with the 50 USD ur willing again for the internet and get a placer around the 100 USD i.e 4000 INR mark. A place along those lines should suffice but careful while you evaluate. Let me know how things go... i can always suggest a few places. Cheers Sidharth puchoo.wordpress.com |
