Well yeah thats true, but isnt that only on Sundays. I've been there twice, and both times the fountain area was exceptionally peaceful.

I love Humayun Tomb also, and in my first visit I spend about 2-3 hours walking in the park at Raj Ghat area - a very pleasant and quiet, and there is a small but nice pond there.

My favourite place for solitude has been “Pragati Maidan” (excluding the days of trade fair when it is more of a hell to run away from). It will remain in some of my happiest memories. A movie theater ‘shakuntlam’ used to show old movies where I saw ‘Mausam’ all alone, without a single person in the whole theatre. Of course, the old charm has been lost somewhat. Now I am looking to Himalayas for solitude, final destination for an old man.

I second that. As weird as it might be, I visited Appu Ghar during its dying years on weekdays, and surprisingly found it really peaceful and relaxing, the whole vibe, blue skies, greenery etc.
