Student in what stream? Are you looking for something in line with your studies? Have you hit on any of the faculty at your school for possibilities?

um... I'm going to join the Institute of Hotel Management, Pusa... So a part time job somewhere along the hospitality sector would be great... However I'm passionate about books and music.. So, a job in something like the Oxford Book Store or Planet M will not go amiss.. I also speak English pretty well.. So, again, I'm not averse to a part time job in a call centre...
Among these, which one is the most feasible?.... Because I will have to study for my exams and stuff, so late nights is not such a good option... |

Well, the retail sector like Planet M or Oxford would keep you away from late hours, while the hospitality industry, at least in a customer-facing role, might involve later hours (remember, the junior folks always get the worst shifts).
That said, if you have any faculty relationships, see if they can do anything for you. Failing that, start hitting the hotels -- make it clear that that's the career direction you're headed and that you're committed to the industry. I'd start with the 5-stars and go from there. |

Might be a good idea to check Connaught Place out... Plenty of bars and restaurants which have decent crowd coming in.. And might be a good exposure for you, hospitality-wise ie..
What I doubt is, though, that such places would advertise for jobs on the internet etc. So you may have to visit CP on a weekend and look around. I frequently see notices for part-time workers at Pizza Hut, TGIF etc and you studying at IHM will definitely help your cause. As far as a call center job is concerned, I think most of them are either in Noida or Gurgaon. So even though you might be working for 4-5 Hrs a day, the commute would be a killer and would essentially take 2-3 hrs (round trip ie).

I'd try for a job in a hotel rather than Mc Do. With your english it should be possible. Dress up, undo the punk hairdo and visit some 5* places to see if they can't use someone. A longtime friend of mine financed part of his studies by doing night shifts at a hotel reception 2 nights a week and during the weekends. Social life was zero but you have to get your priorities straight (as an incentive I might add that he's now an executive and making good money so the returns were good).
Good luck! |

A 5* job in a hotel certainly sounds interesting.... How do i go 'bout it?... Do i just enter the hotel and ask them for the recruitment manager?... Doesn't anybody have any contacts in the hotel industry here??

If anybody had any contacts, why should they call them to help you out? This is where the legwork starts.
Step one, use your own contacts...if you're studying hotel management I'm sure someone at your school will have contacts at...hotels? How about ex- or fellow students. Next step would be the phone, call them up, ask to speak to their head of personnel and start selling yourself. If you manage to get an interview and look half decent, the fight's half won. Once you're in you'll quickly develop contacts with other staff and can look around for (better) opportunities. Anyway, surfing the net won't get you that job, get up and start hunting! |

I think its perfectly ok for him to ask for help. I think internet is great for networking and it isnt half as bad to ask some IMers to pitch in and help this lad. Please dont take my words in the wrong spirit. Just a different point of view. |

Um.. Well, I'm not in Delhi right now as my session starts by 14th July.... So, I was and am trying to 'network' as best as I could... And indiamike is one great site for that...
Of course, when I start studying in my college, it'll be a different story... I'll have a better understanding of the situation and of the many job opportunites available there... But till then this is as I mentioned, the best I can do... I did search out some of the ex-students in a social networking site... And they have agreed to give me a chance when I reach delhi.... |

Well, you can't say that you "seek a position to utilize my current course of study" since you haven't started studying yet, but you can go around and begin establishing contacts, finding out about internship or in-house programs, and developing some relationships in the industry. You can also find out about part-time employment at the same time.
Keep in touch with these people (even the ones that aren't able to help right now) and enroll their help later on. And start at the 5-star places -- they're likely to have training or internship programs and, besides, they're nicer places to spend time in... |
