I didn't go back to Paharganj because I didn't like it. I absolutely loved it--in 1975 . I just always like trying new places. After Paharganj we stayed in a small, damp guesthouse in Connaught Circle area with toilets & showers on the roof (& beds also, though we had a room) ...loved it also! I'm sure it's long gone but I'll never forget it.

I am yet to recommend , and doubt i will ever do so, Paharganj to anyone.... i cant comment on the 'feeling at home because there are other foreigners' around bit but its got to be one of the worst places to shack up in Delhi..or maybe even India.

I wont argue the logic of 'budget travel' , me and my wife try and do that i.e economize within practicality, even within India even though we can afford a lot more but avoid such places...

To go to a place which is considered unsafe by most Indian's - i refuse to let me wife go alone here (if we need to go at all) and when i do refuse to carry too much cash, dont take my car etc...

Plus i agree with Shanshank on the "its not the real India" bit as well..

On Sunday there was yet another repeat of the 'Varanasi to the Himalayas' (LP pilot productions 1995) episode where the presenter does a trip through Varanasi, Agra, Delhi, Rishikesh, Simla then further North to Ladakh. Amazingly, the whole Delhi segment (with the exception of the last brief minute where he rents a motorbike & heads off down Raj Path towards Rishikesh) is shot at PaharGanj. You've got to be kidding me - the whole Delhi segment shot at Peeganj .... nothing else to be seen!

Yes - with that type of attention & promotion, by arguably the '90s leading guide to India, it's easy to see how the joint has become so revered among the backpacker sorts. And with this vintage episode's impressive longevity & continued syndication, that 'word' is apparently still being imprinted upon many first time/newbie visitors to the subcontinent. Albeit PG is a good, cheap place to hang your hat but there are plenty of other good spots in Delhi to stay ..... and possibly to see.

So newbies, lukers why not put away that slightly outdated & myopic LP guide and/or TV remote control, pull up a chair and a mouse and get alot less narrow a view of the 'real India' right here on - IndiaMike.

Smile paharganj is great

count me with the ones who love the place. I have stayed in a couple of hotels in that area and would go back everytime. the people there are very friendly and there are so many places to eat. I never got delhi belly until I went to a more expensive area. I expected that I would get it sometime in the six months I spent in India. The dr. said, well most people get it, including Indians, so no problem. The staff I found in the budget hotels were wonderful. Often related to each other, young guys who will do anything for you, with a wonderful smile and if they see you walking around somewhere else, its like old home week. I am an older woman and I find that the young guys fight over WHO WILL CARRY MY BAGS. I remember coming back late at night after a concert in an auto ricksha and all the lights were blinding, flashing with garish colors, and I almost thought I was in LOS VEGAS!!!!
