Pahaganj help
Hi All
Just arrived in Delhi today for the first time. I've been to over 5 countries before India, but nothing has prepared my for the madness of Paharganj.....its nuts out there!!! I am staying in the Prince Polonia in Paharganj. Can anybody recommedn things to do, places to eat, maybe even watering holes nearby where its a fair price and just not too crazy.....ie quieter!!!! Thanks Stephen & Jacq |

The Gold Regency is a pretty decent enough place for a beer or four.
It's not too expensive either and the food is alright. A walk around Lodhi Gardens, Humayoun's Tomb or Sarfajang's Tomb are all great places to get away from the crowds.

Try the rooftop restaurant at the Shelton hotel -- quiet and unrushed, inexpensive, pretty good food, and current newspapers to read while you wait.

Tiny cafe (can't remember name) serving range of good food (and real brown bread for breakfast!) opposite the Star Paradise hotel. It's in a little alley off the main bazaar nearer to the railway station end. Alley's on the right as you face in the direction of the station. The hotel has a sign from the main street.

The Metropolis Hotel at the far end of Paharganj from New Delhi station ( RH side of road) has decent food and serves cold beer in the rooftop restaurant.
Malhotra Restaurant in the same block does pretty good food including a very acceptable tandoori chicken. Turn right on reaching Metropolis and then first left and it's on the LH side of the street. Paharganj feels quite mellow really, after you've spent a few days there!

Best get out of town!!
Paharganj has this effect on many new arrivals! It will pass but it may take a revisit for you to get things into perspective!! Grab a train /bus and take your first step into India away from the big cities! I suggest a more laid back destination,liKe Bharatpur or Rishikesh to ease yourself into things!! In the meantime fortify yourself with the thought that 90% of the people you see on the main market aren't out to fleece you........... REALLY |

Metropolis

After underspiced european thali for 150 Rs in Metropolis I was sick to the stomach for several days. I cannot say that service in Metropolis especially hotel management was not good - it was polite and decent. But I have known the one perhaps questionable theory regarding food safety in such dingy places like Paharganj or Connaught Place. According to it chances one will not face any problems are higher in cheap crowded places where one can see what ingridients have been used than in middle class spots with rather fickle stream of customers - and both kind of places in India don't have sufficient equipment. To Mr Strongbonger who is in Delhi right now I would suggest shopping centres around cinema halls PVR Priya and PVR Anupam in South Delhi with restaurants, cafeterias, fast food outlets, nice bookshops, internet cafes, music, garment, fancy goods shops... Oh I forgot some decent discos to flex leg muscles after 5 countries. |

We loved this place, its called the Everest Cafe, and it was really nice. Very decent food, and very decent atmosphere. |

Hi All
Thanks for all the replies. I think we have chilled a bit now and are starting to love the place. We actually got to the Malhotra restaurant ourselves this morning - so its good to find out it was recommended after by you guys. Enjoyed some lovely curries - just waiting for the auld Delhi belly to kick in soon. My original thread should have read 25 countries - sorry for the typo Off to Amristar (spelling) tomorrow and then onto the Himalayas for a while. Thanks again for all the replies Cheers Stephen & Jacq ![]() |

For some of the best north Indian food try the place directly opposite the Metropole. Cheap and cheerful this place doesn't look like much the food is GREAT!!! And the chai wallah just ot the right is good too!

Yeah directly opposite the Metropole , I can't remember the name just a small dingy looking place with 6-7 table down stairs and the same upstairs. to the right of the phoney antique shop.
It really doesn't look like much but the food is cheap and best and at 1 rupee it's the cheapest rotis I've had for ages!! |
