Hi,

I need to buy food online and get it delivered to a friend in South Delhi.
There doesn't seem to be the usual 'western' culprets available i.e. TESCO, WALMART etc.
Infact I can't find anything.
Can anyone help me please?

Many thanks

It's hard to suppress asking Why? --- but I guess you must have a good reason

Wouldn't be possible in this city, as far as I know. The way it works here is that you phone your local shop, and they send round your stuff, or your maid goes out and get stuff for you. Delhi may be more modern than Chennai, but I doubt that basics would be very much different.

Don't know if the bigger grocery stores deliver or not. My relatives in Delhi phone their local shops for fresh meat, fruits, etc. I'm so envious of this because here I have to go out for everything.

Online grocery shopping used to be very much possible in Bangalore I think even a decade back (with fabmall)! I'd be surprised if it isn't possible in cities like Mumbai and Delhi too by now!

There's an organic grocery store (very limited selection) in Shahpur Jat that will deliver orders placed online, but you have to join some club first (Rs. 500 fee), and I'm not sure you can do that over the phone. Maybe? Email/call them! www.dubdengreen.com/index1.htm

Well, I've found this one for Chennai. However, from your comment it appears that they haven't caught on for whatever reason!

I suspect there must be similar stores in cities like Delhi too.

Gosh! Well discovered!

That I haven't heard of them doesn't mean much, I guess

Online grocery/household shopping was something I never felt the need of, even in UK, so it is not the sort of thing I would look for, even if we didn't have the lazy options I mentioned earlier.

I did it quite often in Bangalore. I didn't like to face the Bangalore traffic, or the unpleasant roads, --- so tried to avoid those as much as possible. On the other hand, it was a pleasure to pick and choose my stuff in a virtual mall, sitting at my home, and to have it all delivered at my doorstep.

As others have said, in Delhi the usual way is to phone the neighborhood store and they'll deliver at home. Just don't expect a western-style supermarket with a wide range of products. Real internet shopping doesn't happen in Delhi afaik and anyway, it violates my second rule of doing business in India (never pay before receiving the goods and checking them).
"It is preferable to have a criminal for a servant rather than a fool because a criminal's actions are predictable and you can protect yourself against them, whereas there is no telling what a fool's next move will be.

Well, I always paid on delivery. Never checked at the time because the bags were always so well sealed (double stitched). Never, ever, missed a thing. Nothing was ever delivered wrong. This was Fabmart, -- later Fabmall.

'Why?'
I'm in the UK and a good friendhas just lost their job so I would like to send some food. I have looked into sending from here, which I know is ridiculous give the price of food here versus Delhi however it would have cost me £180 to send 13Kilos!! And hence I thought maybe internet shopping would be better!

Fabmall doesn't sell groceries.

Maybe send them a cheque instead? I know it may be less chic or discreet than you'd planned to, but as you're finding the online shopping may prove a little unfeasible.
