one day trips

I will be visiting Delhi from 6th June to 16th August this year to do a IT course. The nature of the course means that I only get Sundays free for leisure.

Can anybody recommend something good and "to be remembered" for me to do on this free day?

And on a typically English question (I'm sorry) if there anywhere I can see and possibly ride Elephants?

thanks

Mughal Delhi, or Agra

For a rushed option, a day trip to Agra to marvel at the Taj should be considered.

In Delhi, wander around Old Delhi, the Jama Masjid and the narrow alleys south of Chandni Chowk, and have lunch at Karim's. (The fort is a waste of time, IMHO.) Humayun's Tomb is not to be missed, and personally I love Jantar Mantar.

You might consider hiring a car for the day, or join one of Delhi Tourism's half- or full-day tours which are good value.

you can also take the night train on saturday evening to Jaipur, arrive early in the morning, enjoy a day there (go to Amber fort, where there are some elephants) and come back in the end of the afternoon...

Besides the above suggestions-
1. Take night train on saturday to Kathgodam reach there early sunday morning, head for almora (1.5hrs from there), spend the day in almora, leave by 6:30 or 7 pm, reach kathgodam and take night train back to delhi, reach delhi early monday morning at 5 am, nice views of himalayas from almora and kasardevi 6km from almora
2. take saturday night train to haridwar, reach haridwar at 5.30 am send the day at haridwar & if possible rishikesh too, return by night 11 pm train, reaching delhi early monday morning. lots of things to see in haridwar & rishikesh
3. Taj at Agra as suggested
4. Jaipur day trip as suggested
5. Fatehpur Sikri
6. Day trips of Delhi - Old Monuments - Qutab Minar, Humayun's Tomb, Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Jantar Mantar etc.
- Lutyen's Delhi - Rashtrapati Bhawan, Mughal Garden, Parliament, India Gate, Delhi Haat, Parliament
7. Golden Temple at Amritsar - Take a night train, visit Amritsar, return by a night train

Lots of things you can do in day trips, but all will be kind of touch and go, but try maximum of these.

All the best
