I think it is a win-win situation for all. Since customer knows there are a whole bunch of car parts dealers at Kashmiri Gate, they would tend to go there because they have a choice both price wise and also quality wise. Also for sellers because they don't have to advertise (Except for putting up a billboard) because customers will only go there. I worked with my brother who is a manufacturer of Leaf Springs near Delhi. For him, it is also easy because almost all his cutomers (Retailers) are located in few major locations in Delhi instead of distributed all over town. All his truckers customers are (May be were!) concentrated in Roshan Ara Road. The system is quite efficient in my view.

Yes, thanks. Shashank's (and your) comments made it fall into place; pretty much as I figured anyway.

May be back with smart insights; or maybe not (Would likely be lenghty, yikes.) But it's pretty clear, yes.

Thanks shashank for explanation of Old Delhi - I never knew it used to be the wholesale market for North India - this explains more 'smelling'. But actually you'll find good smells there too - spices and incense going!
I used to think very odd having all shops the same together but it does make sense - you can drive a good bargain between them and shops all benefit when it is a crowdy time. People will tend to go to less crowded so they don't have to wait a long time, (anyway I do!!)Crowded means I guess the best deals and quality but you can get these elsewhere as well.
Here it is a jumble of mixed shops, because starting off small now growing - but there is now an area for truck parts, grease and oil etc. and all same type of shops together out there.

Born and raised in Delhi and I haven't yet come across a large city in India that could come close to it. Of course if you compare it with country side, the country side would look better. I bet if you visited interior parts of Himachal you would have loved them more than Punjab (I know I do)!

Thats quite funny because in lots of Punjabi villages they have open sewers running along the village lanes. The stench is horrible, sadly these open sewers have now spread to Haryana. To add to that Hoshiarpur has got to be one of the most dull places in Punjab, its only saving grace is that the views in some parts are superb due to the hills.
