No more Sacred cows in New Delhi!

Armed with stun guns and large nets, officials will be out on the streets of the Indian capital in their hundreds this week as the capital gets tough in its mission to eradicate stray cattle.
The problem of New Delhi's rampaging cow population has become so severe that the High Court has issued city authorities with a one-week ultimatum to clear the streets of illegally roaming animals.
The crackdown is likely to end in violence as the owners of the city's 3,500 illegal street dairies fiercely resist all attempts to round up the beasts.
Although tourists are charmed by the sight of traffic brought to a standstill by cows grazing on the city's highways, Delhi's residents are increasingly disgusted by the disruption and danger that cattle pose....

Full Story HERE!

No more wondering cows I guess....

Talking What a pity

What a pity about this round-up! How will I respond to the most often question asked of me about India. "You have cows roaming around and so why can't you just feed the porr masses with those cows."

This will be a death blow to the tourism industry...

One week to clean up the stray cattle… Well Munnabhai and tradition will outlive all these politicians who are trying to make this happen.
Cows have roamed Delhi for much longer than the present government has been around and I think cows will still be roaming Delhi after this present government has long since faded away

Long live the cows !!!

keep them dogies moving, Rawhide.....

wow, stun guns sound really severe, not to mention inhumane. what about ahimsa?

sounds like Delhi needs some good ol' American cowboys. Head 'em up, move 'em out.... (unless you're a fan of 1960s American TV westerns, you'll never get it....)

" At the heart of the problem are the city's illegal dairies whose owners allow the cattle to graze untended during the day before rounding them up for milking in the evenings. These small businesses are often protected by powerful local interests, and have responded with gang violence to attempts to confiscate their animals."

I did not know that.

It's worth noting that these cows are not necessarily happily lazing about in Delhi. When I lived there, it was common to see them with huge festering sores, attacked by dogs and crows, starving and eating trash (which apparently then goes into illegal milk) and hit by cars. Cows in a village or quiet suburb is one thing, and quite fine, but in Delhi it's really not a tenable situation for either the cows or the people. And one can presume that their owners could care less about any of this, so I hope the government is actually successful with this one.

Seeing as how I'm commenting a solid two months after this thread died down, does anyone know how this turned out?

So true. You also get cows feeding on polythene bags which then cause havoc with their digestive system.

i feel bad for those roaming cows eating cardboard and suffocating on plastic, yet there is something so india about seeing them out and about. i asked one of my indian friends why cows roam the streets and he said that if they no longer give milk they are banished from the homestead. now, how holy is that!

Letting cows wander about in traffic is cow abuse, especially if they are wandering at night. A legitimate crackdown would allow the dairies to round up their animals and separate out the real strays, old animals just abandoned in the city to die. Then there would be a need to figure out how to support these older animals in dignity in their declining years since a rendering plant isn't an option. Old impoverished people don't get much of that kind of care, might be hard to find a way to provide it for cows.

I don't think grazing cows on roadside allowances is that bad a thing. Cuts down on the need for mowing. My family grazed a cow out side our old house on the highway road allowance for years when I was a kid and before we got so uptight about everything around here. She was on a tether though and closely supervised. It's just the wandering around loose, eating garbage and developing anti social tendancies that makes cows unwelcome. That's certainly the fault of the owner.

One town to the east of us has hired a flock of sheep to mow the grass on parkways and civic lawns. They roll out plastic movable fencing around the area for them to graze and just keep moving this enclosure around town on a schedule. Works great, don't need to fertilize the lawns anymore either. There's a special spring celebration to welcome back the sheep every summer.

My friend was in Delhi winter before last and saw an elephant also cruising the street unattended with a bicycle reflector tied to its tail.

well they best way to handle cows: give them a reservations where they can roam free ....away from the city. Let them be on their own there: sacred or not.

I've been hearing this 'news' since 2 years... the cows have become fewer in number. But not Zero in Delhi yet.

Hope they remove them all... cows, dogs, elephants, .. the whoel lot from Delhi... there is not enough space for even people there to begin with.

It'll never work, who's gonna eat all the Bisleri boxes?
Seriously, doing this would really change the face of Delhi it will become just another metro, lacking the timeless character we've come to expect of Indian towns and cities!
Oh well they call it progress!!
