Nirad C. Chaudhuri's Old Delhi Home

Today in an attempt to find the late writer Nirad Chaudhuri's 1940's Delhi home, I took myself to the far north west corner of the walled city.

Chaudhuri in his second autobiographical book, "Thy Hand, Great Anarch" described his life in Delhi as a newly arrived journalist from Bengal. He worked in english with All India Radio. He gave an accurate (I found today) description of where he lived on Nicholson Road in a building named "P and O Building" where the initials referrd to the local owners. As a mild joke, Chaudhuri aways referred to his residence as P&O Buildings. Nicholson Road runs just within the northern wall of Old Delhi.

The three story corner building appears to be residential in the upper floors but street level is occupied by machinery sales firms. Somebody with a digital camera might photograph the place for the benefit of Chaudhuri admirers. See Wikipedia etc for Chaudhuri's work.

Yes jyotirmoy, I think his use of English was particularly attractive and his subjects and particularly perspective, novel in a writer of English.

..if I could only agree with his views on Indian Independence and the Ayodhya saga....

He wrote well. But, like Naipaul, I disagree with a lot of it.

Never knew he lived in Delhi. I thought he worked for the All India Radio before he left India.

Yes I agree Capt. there are many who hate NC... well it is the same with anyone with radical thoughts. But NC has many fans too.
