Question new year´s eve in delhi? please advice

Namasté y'all,
My fiancée and I are arriving in Delhi on Dec 28th. We´re staying in india for a month (I´m posting threads all over this wonderful place), but most probably will spend new year´s eve in delhi anyway, unless someone out there has any suggestions of different, fun, nearby places. Has anybody out there spend such a night in delhi, who would care to share with us memories and advice? thank you, Dexter and Peg.

Agree with delhiwala, in the top-end places there will be parties. I only experienced 1 new year in India and that was last year, had the impression then that it's not really celebrated by most of the population. It's not like diwali, don't expect too much in terms of big festivities.

It also seems like most places that have parties charge a ton for entry on New year's Eve. At least, that's how it was last year. It didn't really seem worth it to pay Rs. 2000 per couple just to have a couple drinks.

There will be fireworks, which are fun if you can find a good roof to stand on and don't mind feeling like you're in the middle of a war zone!

maybe new year´s eve in Varanasi then?

Thanks to all for the input
Maybe then we can head direct to Varanasi and spend there new year´s eve, saving a few days to visit Delhi by the end of the trip, since we´re departing from there anyway? We´re not really interested in westerner-big-hotel kinda celebrations...
Getting more and more excited, dexter and peg.

Peg A. Ming, it's very hard to suggest something just for spending a new year eve - e.g. for me, I always try to run away from the crowd (don't get much oppurtunity though ).

Since you pitched the question about Varanasi, are you looking for some off beat options during New Year? May be a 2-3 day trip around that time somewhere close to Delhi? If that's the case, there are quite a few posts in this thread for such requirements: A hideout in the Himalayas?

may it be Varanasi, then

Thanks everyone for your answers. Dexter and I have decided to spend only one day in Delhi, Dec 29th, and then take the night train to varanasi, and spend there a few days, including new year´s. Then we´ll head down south... and leave Delhi for our last stretch, since it´s our departure point, anyway. So we would appreciate new tips for such exciting night in Varanasi (still not interested in big hotel western celebrations. Maybe we´ll just celebrate our private little party). Thanks again, Dexter and Peg.
