Hi there,

Just wondering if anyone can share experiences of staying in the New Tibetan Camp area of Delhi.
Any guesthouses/hotel recommended?

The tibetan area ( tibetan new camp) in Delhi, Majnuka Tila is the name for the Tibetans also known as New Aruna Nagar. It is located after ISBT (inter state bus terminal). So, it is a liitle bit away from the centre.

The place is full of budget guesthouses and tibetan restaurants. Wongdhen House is a good one.
This is a good place to be if you want to catch the Potala bus to McLeod Ganj / Dharamsala.
There are also lots of small travel agencies.
Potala tours and travels is a reliable agency, have a branch there. They have a website : http://www.potalatours.com/ and their email is potala@vsnl.com .

I am an Aussie who is off to India in 5 weeks time. Recently I receive a call from the India consulate requesting, prior to issuing my Visa that I need to sign a declaration to state that I would not stay at any Tibetan Refugee Settlements while in India.

While I am in India I am going on an intrepid tour which is covering the normal tourist route. Has anybody else been requested to do this. Does anybody know the reason for this request?

Vespar , you can stay in tibetan settlements but a permit is required.
I am sure Vistet can help you more then me on the subject.
In some countries, on the visa form, there is an extra line and you can apply for the permit for the settlements, Sikkim etc...
But in my country (Belgium), this line does not appear on the visa form and I do apply in Delhi. Well, I don't apply myself , a travel agency is doing the job for me : it takes ages!
In Northen india, whith so many people going to Dharmasala and Himachal, I never heard about checking but in South, yes, they check.
My friends from the tibetan settlement in Hunsur told me very recently that next time I will go, I will defenitively need a permit as they check.
I have been checked once in Bylakuppe and in Kollegal also.

Hope this will help you. I told this before to other people and they did not believe me but when you go to the settlements in South, there are big boards about this!

Lobo, can't tell exactly how far from the ISBT, Kashimri Gate, to the Red Fort but there are 3 kms between Majnuka Tila and ISBT.

Lobo, got more info : Red Fort and Jama Masjid are 20 minutes from Manjuka Tilla. It costs around Rs. 40 for one way by rickshaw.

Majnu Ka Tila - New Tibetan Colony Delhi

Hi there

just to follow up on the New Tibetan Colony in Delhi. I stayed in Wongdhen House for three nights on my arrival in Delhi and it was fine. On my return from the mountains I stayed on Potala House another good place. There areas is so calm its a great place to base onself if you dont want to be in the thinck of thing in Delhi. The pollution in the city was quiet bad when we were there so it was nice to caome back to Majnu Ka Tilla and breathe somewhat more freely.

Also I came across a wonderful woman who does massage in New Peace House. She and her teacher who is a doctor in acapuncture are great.

This is an old thread, but just wanted to add some info in case anyone wanted to visit this area. In Delhi, take the metro to Vidham Sabha. Then take a bicycle rickshaw (we spent 15 there and 20 back) to Majnu Ka Tila. I know this area is supposed to be torn down, but it was there as of yesterday. It was fun to walk through the area - it's very compact and filled with homes and businesses. I didn't see many restaurants, though.
