Question New Delhi v Delhi

Does it make a difference to add in the 'New' or not?
Political reason .... or lazy writing?

PS Hope I don't cause offence to anyone, that isn't my intention!

The city of Delhi is divided in to two major zones. The older part & the eastern part are referred to as Delhi & the newer part is New Delhi. The two major railway stations are Delhi & New Delhi.

jyotirmoy, so really its just nomenclature then?

I know that I'll have to be careful then when I ask to go to NDLS compared to going to DLI train station.

I think the average person with no idea of India just says 'New Delhi' ?

Sorry, slow work day ... mind starts to wander ....

I agree, If I say to someone that a train departs from Delhi (DLI) station I always wonder if they may confuse this with New Delhi station, so I always put 'old' in brackets before the name.

Just to help confuse the matter, (old) Delhi station is known to locals as Delhi main, where most tourists probibly consider New Delhi to be the 'main' station in Delhi.

When you don't get seats for one station try for the other ones as the trains going there will not show up on the other selection. No one will really bother about the new or old as long as you know where you want to go exactly. Always an excuse to make some more money for the auto drivers who know their way about foreigners with their money making tricks. So be careful where you want to go!!!

Cheers,
Aadil.

These 2 stations are now connected by the metro (I think this line opened recently), it's enough to make us feel sorry for the poor rickshaw driver.
