New Delhi

Arriving in new Delhi on the 4th of august with my girlfriend we are both from Ireland and have never been to India any ideas of where to stay cheap and what to see? We are going to stay for 3-4 days in Delhi before moving on with the goal of getting to Kathmandu and back. Our trip is 6 weeks in total any ideas or help would be great thanks,

Mark

most budgets tourists hang out in Paharganj (near the New Delhi Railway station) where you can find cheap accomodation relatively easily (and are surrounded by other tourists), apart from there you will find lodging expensive in Delhi. you can travel all over north India in six weeks including of course the 'popular' places - before going overland to Nepal (get a visa at the border - USD 25 for 15 days, USD 40 for 30 days and USD 100 for 90 days).

take a circuit in this way (perhaps)

Rajasthan (Jaipur, Udaipur, Ajmer, Pushkar, Shekhavati, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer)
Madhya Pradesh (Orchha, Khajuraho, Mandu)
Uttar Pradesh (Agra, Sikandra, Fatehpur Sikri, varanasi)
Himachal Pradesh (Dharamshala, Manali)
Punjab (Amritsar, Wagah border)
Bihar (Sarnath, Bodhgaya)

then across from Raxaul to Nepal (you could visit Lumbini if interested - it's the birthplace of the Buddha), Pokhara, Chitwan National Park, Kathmandu and flyback to Delhi - or go onto Tibet.

i suggest you pull out a map of India and look at the places i mentioned on it - definitely doable in six weeks.

Thanks for that that's really helpful looking through all those places now. Considering maybe booking a tour package to get around some of the areas easily has anyone booked any tour packages from Delhi before any feedback would be helpful.

You could opt to stay at the Tibetan run guest houses in Majnu ka Tilla, a locality near the Kashmere Gate station of the Delhi Metro which you can easily reach from central Delhi.
