New Delhi Art Galleries

As an artist, I'd like to look into the contemporary art scene in India during my next trip. Anybody know of cool art galleries of contemporary (i.e.: "living" artists doiong modern-ish art, not the tourist/trinket stuff) I've run into galleries in Kolkata and was impressed. Some of these were college/university venues of student and faculty art. Any places where artist hang out, in particular?

I have seen what is produced in Kolkata, and it's true it is not tourist stuff, but it is awfully derivative, old-style, hackneyed abstract "modern art". If that's what you want, there's lots of it everywhere, including Delhi I'm sure. I don't know Delhi that well, but the Mumbai art market is more commercial than Kolkata's, although not any more original. Delhi may be more like Mumbai given the higher number of nouveau riche.

A favorite type of art of mine is representational, socially conscious art, serious or irreverent. What has been termed "new-brow" here on the west coast comes to mind, the art one would find in "JUXTAPOZ" magazine. Abstracts are okay, but they tend to be monotonous. I do have an ad from "ARTNEWS" of a gallery in Delhi that I hope to check out.

Any artist collectives around where one could hobnob with fellow artists?
