No socks it is!
Actually it might have some spiritual meaning.
Temple is the house of God!

Shoes are dirty since they go everywhere.
A follower of God would not want to dirty the house of god.

In most of the large temples I have been to, I have noticed that there is a tank of water where you can wash your hands too.

In cities like haridwar and banaras, and people who are more religious than I am bathe before worshipping (be it be at home or in a temple)

Another reason could be hindu religion is a vegetarian religion (IMHO)
Shoes are normally made of leather

I have observed this in the kungu fuu movies. I guess even Japanese follow something like this.

I collected this collection from a bunch of websites on the net

Hate to admit it (as a vegetarian for over 35 years) but one one of the places would be McDonalds - I love their McVeggie sandwich and I can only get them when I'm in India (it's a different product from the McVeggie available in New York).
Also, don't know if it's in your area of interest, but the National Gallery of Modern Art in Delhi is worth a look. World class contemporary art you wont see anywhere else.

I wouldn't have even thought about going to an art gallery, but it's definitely something I'd like to do!

How would you define a pub? In the 'literal sense', a 'public house' was where one could could order food and alcohol. In this sense, all restaurants that serve alcohol are pubs.
