Money changing at the airport?

We will arrive very early on next Sunday morning at Delhi International. The last time we changed some money there at the James Cook counter in the arrival area where one gets the luggage.
As we have some Rs left from our last trip we wonder whether it is a good or bad idea to wait with changing our Euros to Rs. We will stay only for a few hours in Delhi and then we will depart for Srinargar by plane. By this the alternative of changing will be somewhere in Srinargar where we have not been before.
Is there anybody who can give us hints or/and informations about the right money changing place?

Thanks!
Irsel

No reason not to exhange at the airport. It's convenient, and there's no real benefit to shopping for rates--they don't vary much by institution in India. Better to have the cash you need before you leave the airport than have to search for some place to exhange it later. If your hotel in Srinagar won't do it, do you really want to stand in line at a bank?

Merchand thanks for your reply. Reading your remark about a possible queing up to get Rupees I suddenly remembered all my bad experiences of changing money in Leh. You are so right. I prefer doing other things during my vacations.
Asking this was just to make sure that things concerning this topic have not changed too much.

Many Regards

Is there an ATM machine at the Delhi airport? I have been under the impression that there was. If so, would that be preferable?

Speaking of which, I have been having a hell of a time getting a straight answer from Citibank as to the currency translation utilized in withdrawing money from Citi ATMs in India.

irsel & Fordy,

Check the ATM network symbols at the back of your card. Most of them have websites that allow you search for ATMs worldwidse. For eample Cirrus has an ATM in the Bombay Domestic Airport and the Delhi International Airport.

As of last November, there was no ATM at the Mumbai airport (in the International arrivals area anyway), but there were 24hr counters for Amex and the State Bank of India (which had better rates). The airport levies a 2% fee on currency transactions, so you should probably only get what you'll require before you can get to an ATM in the city.

Mumbai Airport update

I just passed through Mumbai airport and there is now a Canara Bank ATM which is located just outside of the arrivals area past the hotel booking and money changer booths. I didn't use it, but it looked like it had a VISA symbol.

Just want to let you know that a changed my money as usual at Delhi Airport. It was quick and withouot any problems.
During my visit I noticed that there are many ATM. But they only work with electricity which can be a problem in some regions as you certainly know. Therefore I was happy not to need to get money from a ATM exspecially in Kashmir.
