Mens' tailors in Delhi

Does anyone know of any good mens' tailors in Delhi? I am looking to get a few suits stitched while I am in Delhi. I would prefer these shops to be well versed in both English and Italian designs/cuts. I know Raymonds at CP offers tailor made suits but I am not sure how expensive they are. I have also heard of Vaish tailors, but am not sure how much they charge. If anyone has any ideas about these tailors and how much they charge, I would really appreciate some suggestions. I would also prefer buying the material from the same tailors.

BTW, I am talking about western suits, not Indian. :-)

thnx.

I've not got any names, but Lajpat Nagar is supposed to be a good area for decent tailors. Almost all tailors have their own materials (or rather the fabric shops have their own tailors!). I wouldn't imagine communicating in English will be a problem at all. If you're really picky about a particular cut, then it'd be a good idea to take along a suit of your own that you like the cut of, and ask them to make one the same.

There is a great thread with recommendations and costs for Delhi tailoring. If it is not already in the list of similar threads at the bottom of the page, you can search for it on the Delhi forum.

Thank you MrEd. Yes, I will take along a suit with me just in case. Communication should be no problem as I speak hindi.....thanks to bollywood movies.

Haylo, thanks for the tip. I will look for that thread.

Depending on the tailor you should set yourself up to spend about 3000-4000 atleast for a 2 piece suit including the cloth. Mind you, this is around the minimum that it would cost you... the cloth alone can be as expensive as this and more depending on what you buy...

Thats the price on the lower side. Tailors in Delhi charge anything between Rs.800 to Rs.6500 for a two piece suit. Cloth can be had for Rs.300 per meter to Rs.12000 per meter. (There are no limits though, but I am talking about general things)

Pucho, shashank.....thanks for your input. I had actually budgeted about Rs. 10000 - 12000 for a well tailored suit using high end (worsted wool in the super 120 - 150 range). At this price, it is still much cheaper than what I paid for a Banana Republic suit (about CAD$ 600) in Toronto. My only concern is the workmanship, but, after looking at Raymondindia.com website, I have a fairly high level of confidence. Now again, prices at Raymond could be higher....we'll see.

Thanks again for all your input.

Prices in Raymond are generally justified with the quality they sell. Cannot say about tailoring, but their cloth is top notch.

My experience is that the material (Italian Superfine 130 light wool) will be about 5,000 rps for a suit. Could be wrong.

In very city in the world there are top notch and dodgy tailors. Check out where the yuppie business types go for tailoring.

INSIST on 2 fittings and take a clued up observer with you (women are great here) - you can't really pick the faults with fit and cut if you are in the suit.

NEVER disclose your date of departure - the oldest scam in the book is for the tailor to delay the final product until you are about to leave - this means you may be stuck with sloppy work or even substitution of a cheaper fabric.

Oh, and don't pay upfront - a deposit is fine.

No need for this as well , try and get out of it if asked. The fact that you are going to be leaving cloth worth X is sufficient deposit..

Thanks Puchoo, Brisso. Good tip on the departure date. As for a second eye, unfortunately, I am travelling alone so the mirror better be good. :-)

Thanks again gentlemen!

I went to check out a few tailors in Lajpat Nagar yesterday. From asking around, fabric for a suit (generally 2.5m for jacket and trousers) ranges between Rs3000 for a not particularly nice acrylic material, right up to Rs15000 for a pure wool Italian made fabric. To this, one needs to add the price of tailoring, which from the shops I visited, ranged between Rs2000 and Rs2600. The Raymond shops seemed to have the best range of fabrics and looked a bit more 'proper' than some of the smaller little places, but I guess that having quality fabrics is no guarantee of having good tailors.

Two addresses for Raymond shops I went to in Lajpat are:

The Raymond Shop,
I-39, Main Road,
Central Market,
Lajpat Nagar II

&

Beauty Collections
Suiting, Shirting & Shawls ( love it!)
60, Central Market,
Lajpat Nagar

Best of luck with your search for good suitings!
