Having read the good reviews and resonable rates of this hotel in Delhi - I tried to book in October only to find that they are charging R3500 per night + all tax !!! Wow that surprised me a lot.
Any reason for the major increase in rates ? Is there somethig I am missing ? I need a centrally located mid-range hotel. Is this the rate that I need to expect ? Many thanks for any info. Philip |

Not knowing the hotel its hard to say how they compare, but the price quoted does sound exhorbitant.
Look around and you should find a better deal. |

Ginger hotel gets good reviews here and it's about Rs 1000 a night. You can get something pretty good for under Rs 2000, certainly.

Hal yes I have read some good reviews of Ginger hotel too - however I have also read that it is in a really bad part of Delhi. Any views ? Philip |

I like staying in the "bad" parts of town. They're far more interesting. I visited Connaught Place for an hour or two last trip and I thought it was dreadful. I stayed in Old Delhi.

You will be lucky to book Ginger - be quick. We missed out for November. Good luck. We are trying Tara Palace on a recommendation from a friend who has stayed many times.

Tara Palace is where I stayed. It's good. Take advantage of the rooftop in the morning and evenings. They'll bring drinks and food up for you, too. I'd be wary of their offers of travel services. I didn't find their recommended agent to be very honest.

Although I thought the reviews on TA were good, I felt about dubious about the glowing reports for Rameez the travel guy. We are gonna have a good walk around ourselves as it's close to the Red Fort and other places. We will walk about unless the hassle from touts gets too much.

price hike!
Hi 007 - I have also received the same quote from master guest house. I guess they're looking at a different market after their renovations - have to look elsewhere.

Yep I think master guest house have completed renovations and clearly their cost have gone up.
I dont think I want to chance staying in Paharganji and I am having great difficulty in booking a decent hotel for any less so I am feeling that I may have to go with this price. R3500 just seems expensive for Delhi. I have tried Hotel Ginger however as predicted - fully booked. Hal is Tara Palace in Old Delhi. Was it clean is a decent area ? Cheers. Philip |

Old Delhi is a bustling place. Packed and noisy and full of action. I didn't find it any dirtier than other places in India. Might be a bit of a shock if you've just arrived in India for the first time, but I loved it. (I went there after 2 weeks in Hyderabad)
Tara Palace is back from the street, though and is quiet. Like Delhiwala says, lots of the reviews online are planted - take them with a grain of salt. You'd think it was a 9/10 from the reviews. I'd give it a 6 or 7. |

Tara Palace was recommended to me by my colleague Major Singh, he and his family stay there at least once a year. So even though reviews are fake, I can vouch for one genuine person saying it's clean and cheap, plus Hal thinks it's ok. It's in walking distance to the Fort too.

Master Paying Guesthouse
Rs,3,500? I have recommended this place loads of times as it is near to where I live and located in a nice, pleasant residential area but cannot believe this price.
There has been building work going on but I thought that was the place next door - will go and have a look tonight to see what they have done to have gone from 600-1000rps a night to 3,500rps a night.

OK, went there last night, got a look around and the low down regarding prices.
Basically, they have added a small but very nicely decorated bathroom (shower, toilet and washbasin) to their 3 double rooms and included breakfast in their new pricing. I can see the place has been redecorated and as usual it looks clean and homely. At present their charges are: Single occupancy - Rs. 2,000 (inc breakfast) Double occupancy - Rs.2,500 (inc breakfast) From 1 September 2009 their charges are: Single occupancy - Rs. 3,000 (inc breakfast) Double occupancy - Rs. 3,500 (inc breakfast) I cannot judge how competitive this is for Delhi as I am living here and do not need to stay in a hotel etc but can say the place is clean, homely and the area is peaceful with good access to central Delhi. |
