I don't have a phone number for him, but this is his email address.
indiaexpeditions@hotmail.com His name is Sanjay and he has been a great help to all of my family (the Jarmans) when we have been in India. I have recommended him on IM before and the people always report back about him kindly. Mention the Jarmans. We have become quite good friends with him and his family. Lovely people. And he hires reliable friendly drivers. |

Just go to any taxi stand, explain what you want and negotiate furiously. A small car (Indica) should cost about 800 or 900 Rs/day for 8 hours/80 km. Note down the meter, especially in the beginning and get the mobile number of the driver. Nothing as aggravating as waiting in the sun until the guy you pay comes back from his chai break. Most importantly: do not pay up front.

Do we pay by hour or km in india? or is it normally a flat agreed rate from getting from point A to B? |

Everything's possible. The rate I quoted is a flat rate valid for 8 hours and max 80 km, if you use the car longer or do more km (unlikely if you stick to Delhi), you pay more. This is very useful for sightseeing in a city.
For longer trips in the country they will usually quote a per km fare with 200 Rs or so extra per night for the driver and also extra any toll-taxes. If you just want to get from A to B you can agree on a flat fare, all in. They're very flexible, just don't pay any advance money and make sure the driver doesn't run a taxi service between missions and makes you pay for the km to boot. |

In such case we always paid a price by km. The tariff depends on the size of the car. It starts with 5 to 6 rs per km. |

Which reminds me: check that they don't drive 20 km from their 'garage' to where they pick you up in the morning. If that happens you've already lost half of your 80 km/day before driving an inch. |
