Lajpat Nagar -- Euro/US Suits, Glasses, Sherwanis, Simple Kurta Pajama, Dress Shirts
Lajpat Nagar -- Euro/US Suits, Glasses, Sherwanis, Simple Kurta Pajama, Dress Shirts
Hi everyone,
First post here, so please forgive me for asking for help right away.
I'm travelling to New Delhi in a couple of weeks, and am looking for a preferably 1-stop shop for most things, particularly as close to Lajpat Nagar as possible. I was really intrigued by Njorde Style in Hauz Khas (read some threads on that on IM), but not sure I'll get out there. I have one full day of shopping which I want to maximize. I will then be in Punjab for a week before returning to Delhi, and I'll have 2 more days to finalize everything if need be. In any case, here's the list of things I want to purchase.
1) US/EU style suits: I'm 6'3 ~190 pounds.. I doubt there will be good ready made suits for me. Am I right? If I'm wrong, am I better off getting a ready-made and then altering it to fit me better?
2) Fancy Sherwani or other fancy reception wear: I've got 4 weddings to attend this year. Same as above: ready made available for my size?
3) Shirts: Linen and Cotton shirts. Probably 12 in total
Based on the posts I saw about Njorde Style, I could get all of these things from there. But given that Njorde Style (for multiple reasons) probably isn't going to happen, does anyone have recommendations for the Lajpat Nagar part of town?
4) Prescription glasses: A few years back, I was in Faridabadh and purchased from Arora Optical. Extremely affordable and good quality glasses. I think I purchased two pairs of glasses for $24USD total, one of which was a transition lens. I'm expecting to spend about double that on this trip. Again: recommendations for budget opticians? This post suggested there are places in Lajpat Nagar to get good glasses. Any preferred names of places? Eye-Q sounded like a great idea, except that it's very far from where I'm going to be.
I want to get suits, shirts, sherwanis all made from the same place (just from a time perspective). I assume I'll have to go to a seperate establishment for the fabric purchase, but I'm okay with that.
Also, the last time I shopped in India (2009), new release english books were about 25% the cost. Can I expect the same these days?
My sincere gratitude to anyone who can help!

Getting everything from one shop may not be possible. I suggest going a little further to Saket and visit Select City Mall among three shopping malls in Saket. You will possibly find everything that you are looking for.
If the readymade suites do not come in your size you may visit one of the Raymonds outlets to buy the fabric and they have tailors who can stich a suit for you.
There are shops selling designer Sherwanis in South Extension which is quite close to Lajpat nagar. There is a Westside mall in Lajpat nagar market which is worth a try.

Hi Japmans,
For prescription glasses the most famous optician in Lajpat nagar is Dayal opticals. Though he has grown quite a bit in the last few years and has several outlets now including one in the saket malls. You can definitely get your glasses from him.
You can also check various places such as Narains etc in Lajpat nagar for Sherwanis and other formal wear for men. However I am not sure if you will find a ready made outfit for your size. But you can try and they can alter it as well.
Best of luck

So i know i'm quite late in updating this thread
Lalit at Njorde Style is amazing. Totally worth the trip just to experience his good natured spirit and his honest demeanour. And on top of that, his clothing is beautiful. I got two suits, 4 shirts, and 2 trousers made from him in an extremely reasonable budget. To compare, I got two suits (wonderfully made, mind you) made from Anand Sahib in Lajpat Nagar, and those two suits cost almost the same amount as my entire order at Njorde. So it's by all means worth it, both in your wallet, and for your conscience; he's a great great man.
I ended up having a good friend take me to Chandni Chowk market for glasses. I got 3 pairs made, for the equivalent of $25USD. That's not a typo. Two normal prescription glasses, one prescription sunglasses. None of them have broken, and I wear them pretty much every day.
I ended up getting only one sherwani made from Anand Sahib. I decided to buy fancy ready-made kurtas for the rest of my needs, which I bought from Lajpat Nagar. I can't remember the name of the store, but it was on the corner of the C1 market i think. Maybe someone can help me out.. 2-storey, airconditioned store. got 7 of em for about ~21000 rupees.
I was unable to find a good bookstore. I was told to go to Connaught Place, but just didn't get the opoortunity to make it out that way. Next time!

For bookstores South Extension would have been a good bet as they have 3 of the larger chains situated within 100 meters of each other.
