camelgirl. I'm looking at the Florence Inn. Did you know there is a Florence Inn and the Florence Hotel. They are owned by the same company. Inn looks better.

Boo
I didn't know about the Florence Inn. In fact, when I try to find it,the Hotel Florence keeps popping up. If you have a link to the Inn, please let me see it! Also, some places list it as the Hotel Florence Inn. In any case, my research keeps turning up the same hotel, same address, same photos

Below is a post here on IM from cmf99
>I rang the Florence Inn to try to make a reservation around xmas. Unfortunately they are full but they offered me their other "unit" which he called the Hotel Florence. Does anybody know anything about this? Is it the same standard and same location as the Florence Inn?
Alternatively can anyone reccommend a similar standard hotel in the same area (ca 2000 - 3000 rupees a night<

Wow, is this confusing! Now I don't even know which one we actually looked at last time we were in Karol Bagh. They do seem to have the same prices and the same type of facilities & the same type of building but they do have a different address.

I think the one we saw was the Hotel Florence & we ate lunch there (excellent).

We actually stayed a few blocks away at a more expensive & not nearly as nice small hotel (Bajaj Indian Homestay http://www.indianhomestay.com/tariff.html) which I wouldn't recommend because it is not a good value. The photos make it look nicer than it is, though it's OK.

Sure is. When I come to book I'm going to try for the INN first but won't be too disapointed if I have to take the HOTEL.

Your trip will probably be before mine (in January) so I would be interested to know how you get on

I WISH!! We have no trip planned as of now. But we are kicking around the idea of Jan. or Feb. Our biggest travel hang-up (we are retired & have plenty of time to travel now) is our 14 y.o. mostly blind & deaf, but still perky & cheerful dog! It's gotten really hard to leave her for our usual long trips.

Boo, You can tell US about whichever hotel you do go to

I'm not even sure if we would fly into Delhi since we did that our last trip. Time for a change, maybe Mumbai or Chennai next time. Though I must admit I really like Delhi, probably because we've been there the most often.

I stayed in Karol Bagh for our first night in Delhi. Our hotel was pretty rubbish (Apra Inn, not bad, just not good) but it's location to Gaffar Market was great. We arrived at lunch time, slept for a bit and wandered out for dinner at Pind Balluci (good food) through the heaving Saturday market.

So I quite liked Karol Bagh but when we returned we decided to stay at the Ginger, I like this more, especially for its location.

Great rant, Amalfi! Now tell us what you didn't like about Pahar Ganj!

PS: The metro in Delhi is really amazing, well worth the time figuring out how to get around town.

Calling tourists these names is a bit harsh surely!?
They're almost as human as the rest of us.

Most members on this forum have a certain affection for India and tend to be more charitable towards Paharganj and possibly look beyond the surface . However , unsuspecting novices who come to India whithout much research and little idea of what to expect get the shock of their lives when they land up in Paharganj and get their first introduction to india here.

I had read a blog of two 18 year old Gap year British kids on a year long world tour landing in Paharganj on a two month sojurn to India , being so traumatised here that they stayed put in their hotel rooms for 3 days waiting for their tickets out of India to Thailand refusing to believe that there was an India outside Paharganj. Since then, I try to warn anyone showing an inclination or naive enthusiasm towards Paharganj .

It's like that in almost every country I've been to.
I think there's just a certain amount of people who can't look outside the square.
I can't wait to visit Paharganj, But I'm sure as hell not gonna stay there.
I need my sleep.

I have just got to butt in here , i really enjoy Paharganj. It's the mix of people which make it such an interesting area and the cost of accommodation you just cant beat .550 IRS for a three bedded clean en suit room ,windows and airy .on the way back 450 IRS for a freshly painted room ,new tiled and fitted bathroom ,every thing worked and well (the shower was gorgeous) rooftop restaurant ,clean good food ,downside no beer and the foyer at the end of a narrow alley would put you off.As for gifts to take home ,the normal run of excellent textiles ,you might be able to buy cheaper /more expensive in another area ?all the stone and brass goodies are all available at a good price, spices ,all there ,shoe shoppes ,incense shops ,no problem. As for touts i was approached once and ignored him ,no problem .The smiles and greetings which were in my direction warmed my heart, also it is far more Indian then backpackers. Admittedly it is dirty and sometimes smelly ,there is no MacDonald's and a shortage of chrome and wi-fi spots ,the road surface is very uneven so therefore can make it difficult for a wheeled bag ,so spend a few rupees and get a rickshaw along it .Its not as bad as it looks and the cows are very friendly
PS it's as noisy as most big cities ,and i have never found it a problem .
eyes ,eyes that have seen all , come back to the white chrysanthemum (Basho)
