Jammu mail to patthankot leaving from Old Delhi station??
Hello again
I will be in Delhi for a few days and then I will be travelling to Pathankot(Mcleodganj) from Delhi by Jammu mail on the 15th June 2007. From Which platform Jammu mail departs at Old delhi station? I understand Jammu mail for Pathankot depart from Old delhi train Station. Correct me if I am wrong. I intend to stay at Paharganj area while in Delhi. How far old delhi Railway station from paharganj? Is it walkable distance? I have read some reviews about Paharganj Main bazaar hotels. Quite a mix of pros and cons. I am visiting Delhi with my family, 2children and parents. Will I make a good holiday experience by choosing a Paharganj Main bazaar hotel for our Stay. My budget for the hotel for two standard airconditioned room is Rs 1000- 1200/- perday. Thanks in advance |

You can take the metro to reach Old Delhi station. Lot has been written about Pahargunge, its ambience & hotels. Some love it and some hate it.

yeah walking would be too hectic with Luggage as the lanes are very crowded and you would not be sure of the way as well.. you can board the Delhi Metro and they will charge Rs.6 per head...and it will hardly take 5-7 minutes.. You sure can stay in Paharganj..but dont carry that image of Delhi .. as it is the most downmarket area of Delhi.. |

Thanks Shashank,
I have to choose paharganj as my budget gives no choice! I am a bit concerned for the safety -security aspect of Paharganj area. Not on the comfort or luxury aspect of the locality. Should I take the Metro train (yellow) from New Delhi station to chandnichowk or Kasmeregate for Old delhi Railway station? little more elaboration will be of greathelp. Thanks |

Get down at Chandni Chowk Station.........
the prob that i see for you and ur family using the metro is....you are staying in Pahargunj which is on the opposite side of the metro (which is on Ajmeri Gate side) carrying all the luggage across the station would be a problem. (in that case u would need to buy platform ticket) What i would suggest is to take a auto to Rajiv Chowk Metro station and take metro from there......... You will easily find information on station about the platform from which jammu mail wud leave.......... if u are going by train to pathankot : i wud suggest spend some time in going to Dharamshala (mcleodgunj) using Kangra valley railway ( u can catch it from Pathankot Station and get down at kangra : 20 kms from there dharamshala if i remember right) |

to clear any confusion above.....
pahargunj and ajmeri gate are two sides of new delhi railway station............. metro is on ajmeri gate side and u r staying in pahargunj, so u have to cross the station to reach the other side and ND railway station is quite huge to walk all the way with luggage.......i hope now its more clear |

another thing...not sure about Jammu Mail..but I assume its not a very good train..if you have not got your tickets done on the same..then you might consider booking "Uttar Sampark Kranti"..it does'nt go to Pathankot, but you can get down at "Chakki Bank" and from there its five minutes to Pathankot on an Auto..would charge Rs.5 per head to the max..
The reason I say this because Uttar S Kranti would hardly take 8 hours to reach Chakki bank..while Jammu mail might tale longer time..you might want to verify the same.. |

Deeps79,
Thanks for the clear info. We have planned not to carry anu hefty luggage. Each adult will carry a piece not weighing morethan 20kgs and total not exceeding 3pcs fitted with rollers to stroll. With the metro ticket one is permitted to cross NDLS station? |

well metro tickets (rather Token) can be purchased only the metreo station... anyways if the luggage is not much you can Climb the PaharGanj Flyover...(there is a staircase from the Pahar Ganj Side of NDLS) and move on that towards ajmeri gate..and from there you can board the metro.. it would be a 5-10 minutes walk..whereas if you go thru NDLS you need to purchase a Platform tickets..not sure how much that would cost..but would not be substantial..(Rs. 5-10 maybe).. |

platform tickets cost rs 3
having lived always in delhi with its streets........i wouldnt have walked all across the ND station from one side to another with even 20kg of luggage in June heat spl with a journey ahead I would still suggest, take a cycle rick (2 people can sit easily) get down at outer circle of CP/ Rajiv Chowk and walk for 5 mins in peaceful road to reach metro station ( Autos will drop u directly at metro station if you want) |

The Jammu mail is fine to go to Pathankot.
The train used to leave from platform 13A. from Old Delhi station at 9pm or thereabouts. You get into Pathankot at about 8am depending on any delays. If you decide to take a rickshaw/taxi from Pharganj ask the driver to go to the back entrance of the station. You can walk right in to platform 13A as its right next to the back gate. Much less crowding and less walking with bags. I'm assuming of course the train still goes from there. My info is a couple of years old |
