Smile Is 256kbps good enough for VOIP phones?

I am bringing with me a Vonage phone system to Delhi/New Delhi area, and the hotel that I will be staying in has a 256kbps connection which I will dedicate entirely to my VOIP. Would this quality be good enough for me to call all my clients/prospects?

I intend to use my VOIP during non-peak Indian hours - from 6:00 PM to 3:00 AM.

Opinions/Suggestions?

128 kbps works for me

I am using a 128 kbps connection from airtel and that works fine for me, I am thinking that 256 should be fine. Make sure your VOIP can handle 220 V as the one I have was only 110 V and had to buy a converter which are only about 500 RS but still...

How do I get Airtel?

If I go to India this January, can I purchase an Airtel system at a mall, or do I have to wait 3 weeks like in the old days?

Also, can I keep an American number for this to work out? My Vonage system has an american area code.

You'll have to take your chances. Unsure what kind of switch, node, network, or codec Vonage are using - let alone how the service would work from here. Latency is the key. I've got a 256k connection and the latency from Delhi to Mumbai is higher than to the states (571ms to Mumbai but only 341 to LA). If the latency gets too high - you'll have to say "over" after every sentence.....

good luck.

I used to get good results with Skype.

These days, even the ringing tone sounds distorted

With Vonage, you can keep your American number and use the phone anywhere in the world with no problem - as long as your have an Internet connection.

256 shouldn't cause you any problems. My connection was usually around 150 or so and I never had Vonage cut out in two years of use.
