Pahar Ganj, sounds like the same area, if you want to experience full on then go there because thats what you will get, plenty of cows dogs noise and people, great area to shop but I'm probably too old, (5os) to stay in that area but if thats what you want and you are young and looking for life in India go for it, it was one of our favourite shopping locations in Delhi, we met a man named Atter Singh in a shop there(his shop) it turned out to be he aslo owns the Royal Guest House (INN) in the main Bazar if this is the area and your spelling may be wrong other mambers may know the Pahar Ganz area is well known plenty of young backpackers and well all sorts of tourists but deffinetley full on my advice to a first timer would be spend a day or twon in a quiter area and guset hpuse and get the feel of delhi first instead of walaking out on day one and getting hit full on,But if thats want you want to experience the ganj is the place.

The Anoop in dead center of the Main Bazaar. Rooms are so-so. It's a cheapy place with lots of rooms and pretty inexspensive. The rooftop resturant is a good place to chill out and relax and watch the bazaar below.
For Rooms I give it one star ![]() It is what it is, a budget place to stay. Rooftop Resturant I give four stars ![]() Good place to escape the madness and chillout Location I give three stars ![]() It's smack dab in the middle of main bazaar and easy to get to and find. Though rooms facing the bazaar can be noisy. For a budget place it's okay. Very popular with Koreans. |

Hare Krishna and Hare Rama guesthouses both used to be popular, opposite each other, sort of halfway or more to the end of the center of things-ish along Main Bazaar, a little bit past the market (coming from New Delhi station). From what I've read they're still around. Krishna has an entry under the hotels listing here actually (it used to be you needed to re- and recount every bill there but they were otherwise alright if a bit too keen on taking newcomers for a ride). Both have/had rooftop restaurants and were nothing special but OK; I personally liked the Rama better, I've got room 312 noted down as a favorite for the little terrace with the old tree if it's still there. Should you find out it is let us know by all means!
Basically MB is full of essentially very similar places fitting your description anyway so you'd have a hard time not to find a place.

I usually stay at Anoops my first night, and when I pass through Delhi, because it is cheap, I like the restaurant, and it is close to the station for those 6AM departures. You can see a photo of a room there in my photo gallery. As I always explain, when I get to India after a long flight, and it's the middle of the night, I like to get food at the restaurant, and watch the city come to life as the sun comes up.
I also had a good experience staying at Nirulas in Connaught place, though it is more expensive.

Check indiamike's hotel listings, they're pretty good.

The Navrang, up a small alley around the back of Main Bazaar, was 80 rupees a night last year, but a bit of a dive...

I'd reccomend Nirulas in Connaught Place too... I stayed there for the first time a couple of months ago in one of the deluxe suites and it was amazing! It was like having your own flat in the middle of Delhi... marble floors, lovely bathroom, lounge room as well as bedroom and a balcony the same size as the 'flat'. Brilliant room service too... However it does cost 50 quid a night but nonetheless great value for what you get. Normally i stay in sunny guest house round the corner so you can imagine the contrast...
When i get hold of the pics i took i'll post a review in the hotels section... |

Hare Krishna
Stayed at Hare Krishna a few times during few visits to Delhi and always found the staff as friendly as you get, and that is actually the reason I keep coming back there. Rooms are not great. I like the Thai dishes at the rooftop restaurant.

Yeah I always stay at the Hare Krishna, out of habit really. The rooms are no better or worse than anything else at that price in the area but as a solo woman traveller I have never felt uncomfortable or had any hassle there and the staff are friendly and helpful. They are also clean, which helps!I was there recently after a 5 year break from India and some of the rooms now have colour TV ( not all so ask if you really want to catch some 10 year old Baywatch!) tho' mine was really inconveniently locate so that I couldn't lie in bed and watch it!
