india virgin - first timer beginning travels in Delhi

Namaste everyone,
I'm flying into India in Decmeber and will be staying for about one month (unless of course I fall in love with India and decide to leave everything I know and stay). I'll be landing in Delhi and will do Agra and a bunch of places in Rajasthan before journeying down to Bombay. My question is this: do I need to make reservations in guesthouses ahead of time as the tourist season will be out in full force? I'm just looking to stay in dirt cheap budget guesthouses, nothing really nice or anything. And does anyone have a recommendation for the first few nights in Delhi? I'd appreciate any help you all can give me... I'm looking forward to the most intense experiences of my life....
homesick for something i've not yet known -

No I don't think you have to book ahead even in December. I've never booked ahead yet and have only once nearly come unstuck. Generally India has a lot of hotels many are listed in guide books but by no means all!

India is still a great country for this wil o the wisp type of travel go for it you won't have any problem!

hey cyberhippie,
thanks for the advice. i've heard so many differences of opinion on the reservatin thing that i knew it'd be worth it to ask. can you think of a cool place for me to stay after my arrival in Delhi? i think with a little bit of initial direction i'll be off to a good start. once again, your help is much appreciated!

Have a look at the Hotel Listings on IM, under Delhi, Paharganj is probably the best area for the type of accomadation you're looking for. Theres lots of hotels/GH in the area, Its geared to budget travellers/backpackers, ie, hotels, eateries, IT, & lots of other like minded people with information & ideas to share,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Sounds to me like you've got it all together and are willing to let India take you where she wants you to go - that's a wonderful way to go.........share your dream with us when you get there, it's great to see everyone's different interpretations of the Land we have all come to love....

If you make reservation before hand you will be paying a lot more than by just arriving at the hotel in question.
