Imperial Hotel - dinner at Spice Route restaurant

Am meeting a friend in Delhi close to his birthday & thinking of taking him to dinner at the Spice Route (at home in Melbourne we have a tradition of dinner somewhere swish each year for both our birthdays).

Can someone give me an estimate of what 2 courses (or an average feed) for 2 people might cost there? What sort of clothes would be appropriate? (considering I'm backpacking & won't have anything better than a long skirt or salwar kameez with me).Of course if you tell me I have to wear a glamorous salwar kameez with a glittery dupatta instead of my everyday one I guess I'll just have to buy one!

Thanks for telling me the obvious seventieshippie! As a fellow seventies hippy who's menopausal I'll be charitable & only assume you're suffering from grumpy old men/ women's syndrome! I re-posted this as although I valued the one answer I received, I would also value hearing from others. The posting was also from a male, so they may not be the most experienced to advise me on what would be most appropriate to wear. As I posted the original post on the Chennai thread that many people wouldn't read, I decided to also post on a more general thread where more people may read it. Hope that's "justified" my re-posting to your satisfaction!

Would be pleased to hear anyone else's view. Thanks,
Kay

"Dress code: Smart casual would be fine. A skirt should be ok I guess." Oops! Karan321 already said that.

But now do you feel better, since his answer has been endorsed by a middle-aged woman from California?

Instead of posting the same question in multiple threads, or re-posting the same question later, in the future you might try just "bumping" the original query to see if you can get more responses.

The Imperial is a very upscale hotel, so normal backpacker duds are not quite what you would expect to see on the patrons there. I think "smart casual" is a good answer. If you blow into Delhi without anything chi-chi enough, pick up a nice, new salwar kameez outfit from the Cottage Industries Emporium across the road from the hotel.

Imperial does not worth- if you are ready to spend that much of money- this hotel is just selling it's imperial name. Go to any 5 star deluxe hotel and enjoy more- if nothing special with imperial.

I would have to disagree, during my three week visit in India last year my boyfriend and I went to the Spice Route twice, it was our first and last dinner there and very well worth it. The food is great, the service is great and the restaurant itself is quite a sight, afterall it did take 9 years to build and was voted one of the top ten restaurants in the world. Although the menu is pricey it is not nearly as expensive as you would imagine in a restaurant with such a reputation. I would not change your plans

Dear Kay,
Garden of Five Senses is a tourist complex in chhattarpur area in delhi- one must visit place not for the restaurant but the whole area is a huge temple comlex- variety of indian temples- Nagara style, Vesara style and Dravira style- three main temple architectures can be seen there. And the restaurant is also very cheap and quite interesting too.

But restaurant wise your selection is quite ok and suggestable. Though all the five star deluxe hotels are having equally good (or even better) restaurant - which might cost you less.
