I want to buy a dupatta in Delhi. Prices?
I want to buy a pricey dupatta while in Delhi (to wear instead of a Western jacket) so I can look cool. I want the kind that Amitabh Bachchan wears in Mohabattin and Kabhi Kushi Kabhie Gham or like this one that Rekha wears in Silsila (except the guy version).

My question is, what can I expect a seller to ask for a pricey dupatta and what kind of price should I actually pay? Wonderwomanusa in another thread said that Himachal Kulu shawls are popular in Delhi right now. Does anyone know what kind of price high end Kulu shawls are selling for in Delhi?

Byron, my friend, a dupatta is the "scarf" that women wear with salwar kameez; is THAT what you are looking for? I've never seen Amitabh Bacchan in one of those.
Are you thinking of an achchkan (sp?) That is some sort of man's jacket.
As far as Kulu shawls go, I saw woolen ones for Rs600-1000 or more at the HP Emporium in Delhi. Also saw a couple that were silk and yak hair, with bright wool border -- those were around Rs 3000 or more at Central Cottage Industries Emporium.
I also saw a beauty that someone had bought direct from the weavers up in Kulu -- it had an allover pattern and was very elaborate, and I suspect "cost an arm and a leg" as they say in America.

Kullu 2002: Kullu shawl with repeating geometric design throughout: Rs 750
Mumbai 2001: Man's orange silk "dupatta" with gold thread accents" Rs 2,000.

OK just looked at Byronic's link to pic and what he wants is simply a SHAWL which now makes more sense as he says he wants to wear it instead of a jacket. You can get them ANYPLACE. Men simply wear plan ones in muted colors. Rs 150 to "sky's the limit". For a man, a decent one could be had for Rs 350.
With Kullu shawls the cost will depend on the amount of colour pattern, the quality of the workmanship and the type of fabric.
If you have the time it's best to look around and compare what different shops have to offer. You could pay up to 3000R's or more for a high quality Kullu shawl.

What a long strange trip it's been!

OK thanks for the imput. So what we are talking about is a SHAWL as opposed to a DUPATTA. I though that they were the same item. Dupaata is what is that salwar kameez, salwar churidar scarf thing but it can be worn like a shawl, naa? So a shawl must be thicker and can't be worn as a dupatta? Then of course a MAN would never wear a dupatta, but he would look very distinguished in a scarf or shawl, even though the items are virtually the same dimention size and fabric... And I'm guessing there are all sort of subtle differences that I'm not even catching on too.
So Amitabh is wearing a SHAWL in these photos? What is he wearing under neath? Is it a Kurta? Is it a specific type of kurta? (I want to look like this as I'm climbing the fort at Kalinjar ;>
BTW I look just like Amitji... (just kidding)

Oh Ya, and I understand that wearing such attire, a fancy kurta and shawl is very formal wear and not basic street fashion. It would be akin to wearing a rented purple velvet wedding tux to the America's mall, if I wore a kurta and shawl on the street, naa?
This is gonna be great!!!!

Yes dear, that is a shawl and no it is not the same thing as a dupatta. You only wrap a duppata as a shawl if you don't have a shawl handy and you are chilly.
This is a dupatta over salwar kameez. The salwar are the pants and the kameez is the top and the scarf is the dupatta. Men can wear salwar kameez but in India most do not.
P.S. Shawls are made of wool; duppatas are not.

The dupatta is only worn by women as the third part of the shalwar kameez (in India anyway). In Pakistan, men also wear the shalwar kameez. But in India men don't wear the shalwar kameez, they wear kurta pyjama. Amitabh is wearing a kurta top, with a shawl over. In the olden days, men wore this in the street but now they don't usually. However, no one will care if you wear one, they will just think you've "gone native". However, make sure it's winter when you wear that shawl. It might be a bit hot in summer. Men in India wear scarves (which on women are called dupattas) or shawls for formal wear only nowadays in the middle/upper classes. But the working and country men will still wear shawls in winter sometimes, very sensibly, as it's too cold otherwise.
Kurta pyjama in white cool fabric (like fine cotton) is also a very good summer outfit for travellers in the daytime.
A Nehru jacket is a jacket but with a high collar. In wool or nowadays it's very trendy in linen (but linen crushes, so a mix might be better). Achkans are very nice. Also sleeveless vests are often worn over the kurta.
How about a long dhoti in silk or very fine expensive cotton with a fine sari or gold border worn with a kurta pyjama top over, and a shawl flung over a shoulder? This is Bengali male formal wear.
As an alternative to kurta pyjama, you can wear churidar instead of the pyjama bottoms. A churidar is tight and gathered from ankles upwards, which looks nice, I think though that is usually worn with the achkan...
How about an Assamese tribal print shirt? Some of the young male designers are doing this for men. A trendy short sleeved shirt in tribal geometrics.
In Bengal, home lounging wear for men is the lungi (a wrapped long skirt/sarong) and chappels, slippers easy to slip on and off, in hot weather. Nice home wear. Some British men adopted this for lounging around in hot weather in the old days.
In the south, men wear lungis in the street too. A long lungi can be worn in the streets in South India with a kurta top with chappels as footwear.
