No, Dilliwalla - it's definitely Chandni Chowk because I used it going to Delhi recently. Came into Old Delhi by train, then wheeled my case along to the Metro.

its a fairly large building and I don't think it can be missed even in all that hustle and bustle..and as you say if you saw the actual trains and tracks, then you might be walking somewhere on the back side of the main building...

As others have said, Chandni Chowk is the pace to be, and more specific point for a rickshaw wala would be Fawara..

Its Chandni Chowk station DW...you have to get down at that station and its a long underground walk to the Old Delhi Station..

That's a point re seeing the trains and tracks, because from the front of the station you can't. The building hides most and if I recollect there are other buildings, stone/brick high faces along the trackside as well. I remember seeing a glimpse and knowing I was near the station from an overhead bridge nearby as we passed over, and a few open places to see tracks but not very near the station.

This is what I meant:
"Name of Stations:Vishwa Vidyalaya, Vidhan Sabha, Civil Lines, Kashmere Gate, Delhi Main, Chawri Bazar, New Delhi, Rajiv Chowk , Patel Chowk and Central Sectt"

In '06, this is definitely what the maps/stations showed and Chawri Bazar was shown in brackets with Chandni Chk. (or vice-versa). I suppose a renaming took place last year, becos the online map shows the same as what u both say.

The Metro Station which is alongside Old Delhi railway station and underground is named Chandni Chowk. The announcement in the metro trains advises passengers to change there for the Delhi station "of Indian Railways" to avoid any confusion. The exits open towards Chandni Chowk market near Gurudwara Sisganj and Fatehpuri on one side, and towards Old Delhi station on the other, for which you need to cross the span of the Delhi Public library building underground.

A word of caution here. How big was your case?
Luggage as such is not allowed inside Metro stations or trains.
Only small bags can be carried in, as per the whims of the security personnel.
This must be known to passengers alighting at New Delhi or Old Delhi, planning to travel by the Metro.

But I have not heard anyone facing any problems with luggage...luggage is not allowed to discourage traders, shopkeepers etc from carrying their goods from wholesale markets to their shops, customers etc..and other such activities...however if its 'genuine' luggage of a traveler then there are no issues, atleast I have never faced any and have not seen anyone facing the same at New Delhi OR Old Delhi metro station..

I don't doubt any of this , merely pointing out some historical facts - that the 2 metro-stops concerned were previously known differently.

Thanks to you and the others for this bit of info, I vaguely figured that it was a fair walk underground in the vicinity of DPL. Very imp to know -the metro's basically unsuitable to go to Old Delhi RS for those who can't walk long, specially with baggage.

Dilliwalla - you are right re the Metro not so suitable if you can't walk long, and your luggage is difficult. My bag came within the measurements ( I have the Metro brochure so I measured the case beforehand - you are allowed 60cm length,x45cm breadthx25cm height. And not to exceed 15kg. if you only had that, you would be o.k. for managing the steps and walk provided you are in normal condition with your legs (btw I don't see any lifts there, but maybe are - these would certainly be helpful for the steps with luggage). However, as well as this case, I had a fairly medium-heavy laptop in hefty shoulder bag, plus my money and business stuff in another shoulder bag, plus the usual plastic Tuffboy water bottle. (In Oz I would have been referred to as 'the bag lady' a very derogatory term!)
My experience was such that if I was in the same position at a later date I would take a taxi from the Main Entrance of Old Delhi station. I managed, but after that long underground walk, my right pulling arm of the heavyish case was aching. It was very tricky getting all of me through the automatic jaws of the gates at the Metro. However, I got out at Secretariat, and caught an auto there, saved myself quite a bit of money in the process. Have concluded in future though with such encumbrances not such a good idea!

btw - this brochure which I picked up towards end of 2006 has marked New Delhi, Chawri Bazaar, Chandni Chowk in that order.

Aishah, it seems to me, if the access to Chandni Chauk itelf (overground) is not difficult, people wud be better off going up and taking a cycle-riksha or 3-wheeler to the RS.

The change of names on paper, i.e. maps must have taken place a bit earlier, and physically (on the signs, inside the trains) a little later becos I saw them as I described in early-Dec '06, or in '05 - I frankly don't remember.

The OP's post got me to thinking, since most Delhi roads do have names - what IS the name of the road in front of the station?
It's S.P. Mukherji Marg.
(I knew that! Just had to look up Eicher's to confirm, heheheh)

Yes, that's not a bad idea re rickshaw between the front door of Old Delhi and Chandni Chowk! Depends on how fit you are and your baggage. My NZ nephew and his friend walked it easily with big backpacks on their backs, and convinced me I could do it too. Not quite so easy for me as I posted! I doubt that a coolie would take your luggage for you all that way either, and cheaper for rickshaw (10 rupees max. I should think). Interesting you found the name of the road, Dilliwalla.

Cycle Rickshaws have recently been "banned" in Chandni Chowk. So you can find them on the sidelines, with cops trying to shoo them away all the time. Chaos confounded.
Meanwhile, autorickshaws go up and down the road, as share taxis.
It may not be so easy to find a rick from Metro exit to Old Delhi entrance.
