how to arrange 6 days travel in Delhi, Jaipur, Agra and Varanasi?

Hi all,

i have 6 days to travel in India, i know it's definitely a short period, even for just a glance...

i thought about visiting Delhi+Jaipur+Agra+Khajuraho+Va ranasi at the very beginning, but i was told it's absolutely impossible, so i gave up Khajuraho, will it be better and feasible enough now?

my in&out of India are both from Delhi, so i put my first and last day there. i mean the first day i will stay in Delhi for a city tour, possibly go to Jaipur by overnight train, if it's doable..and then after 5 days, back to Delhi from Varanasi also by an overnight train..

then i will have 4 days left for Jaipur, Agra and Varanasi. here could anyone kindly indicate that how to arrange the itinerary and schedule? what parts of this journey is unmissable?

thanks very much! any kind of info is much appreciated!

Are you intending to fly?? If not your going to be spending a lot of your precious 6 days sat in a train/taxi/bus!! Travel is slow in India, I would probably leave out Varanasi as well if your planning to train it!!

In my opinion, I'd only go to two cities. Delhi, and either Agra or Jaipur. Choose the city you haven't been to before, or if you have been to neither country, go to Agra and see the Taj. See what the fuss is about. And as the Hippie said, taking public transport is really slow in India.

I guess you could do overnight journeys to get from Agra to Varanasi that would be just about doable, though exhausting!!

Here's a rough plan!!

Day 1 Delhi sightseeing, evening train to Jaipur

4059 DLI JSM EXPRESS DELHI 18:00 JAIPUR 23:45

Day 2 Jaipur sightseeng, evening train to Agra

854 MARUDHAR EXPRES *JAIPUR 15:40 AGRA FORT 21:10

Day 3 sighteeing Agra/Fatehpur Sikri, evening train to Varanasi

4854 MARUDHAR EXPRES *AGRA FORT 21:15 VARANASI JN 09:30

Day 4 + 5 Sightseeing Varanasi, evening train to Delhi

559 SHIV GANGA EXP VARANASI JN 19:00 NEW DELHI 07:40

Day 6 can be used for shopping in Delhi before your departure! or you could use the extra day in Agra!!

It's a punishing schedule but it's your trip!! I hope this is of some assistance!!

oh,,,thanks a lot! really appreciate all of your kindes replies

i know time is just limited, but as i gave up Khajuraho already,,Varanasi is indeed a place that i really don't wanna miss..so perhaps i just take Hippies' suggestion..

i still wanna ask whether it is possible to take an overnight train from Jaipur to Agra, or from Agra to Varanasi? i think it could be saving time...am i right?

or should i just rent a taxi and a driver? i heard it's not far away from Delhi to Jaipur, or Agra..

and as far as i know, Delhi - Varanasi - Agra - Jaipur - Delhi is also a choice, right the opposite! should i try it this way?

do need some advices!!! thanks!

There are NO suitable (at least not listed on the railways site anyway) overnight trains between Jaipur and Agra the one I listed seemed the best choice. There are a couple of trains that leave at 2am but that wouldn't be a good train when arriving in Agra at 6.35am

The train I quoted above between Agra and Varanasi, is an overnight train!!!! leaves at 21.15 and arrives 09.30 the next morning!

Taking a taxi is a possibility but it would eat into your time a little commuting between places better to use the train and hire taxis locally for sight seeing!!

And yes you could do the trip the opposite way around if you so wished!!

Yep you can use the general quota no problem!! Either this train has no foriegn tourist quota or it's already sold out, there's usually only a limited tourist quota (4-10 seat per class) if the train has one at all!!

thanks very much!

oh, one more thing, i heard delay of train is very popular there in India,, but how late it would be? take this 15:40 train for example, will it depart from Jaipur, say 3-4 hours late? then does it mean i could have more time for sightseeing in Jaipur?

btw...i'm quite grateful to your quick replies!
