Hi,

I am travelling to india for 7 weeks and landing in Delhi for a couple of days from the 26th of feb 2010. It is my first time in india and am going to spend 3 weeks travelling around Rajasthan(mathura/rishi, agra, jaipur, jodhpur, udaipur and various other places), then a flight down to chennai/Ponducherry for a week, a flight for 10 days in the andaman islands and then travelling to Bengalaru for my flight home.

Primarily, I would really like to find out some information about Delhi, I have been researching for ages but still feel like a complete noob.

I am ideally looking to either meet other travellers/cool local guides and the like to show me around delhi? Is anyone on here going to be in delhi then? fancy taking me for a coffee/beer?

I will still be fresh out of the packet so will be looking to have some fun but nothing to crazy.

Unfortunately I miss you by a few weeks. My advice would be to stay on Parangange which is the backpacker/budget ghetto in Delhi. As far as they go, I personally find it quite amusing. More over, it is a decent place to meet other like-minded travellers. I usually stay in Kare Krishna hotel which has reasonable rates for a capital city, is very clean, friendly staff and a great roof top restaurant to meet people. As for Delhi itself, could be a bit overwhelming at first but hey thats India! One more thing I could suggest is couchsurfing.org which is a fantastic project in which many locals take part in. Staying on someones couch sounds a bit weird at first but I've always had nice times doing it. Plus you have a local who will probably be very willing about showing you around places you would not otherwise see as a tourist.

Enjoy your trip!

@replayzero

There are loads of things to see in Delhi. It all depends on your intrests. Please refer few earlier posts which will help you regarding the common question 'What to see in Delhi' ...

things to do in Delhi
Your Top 3.

Regarding meeting, your plan is still about 2 months later but we can plan things later. Also you can check out IndiaMike Meetups forum where there are lot of meets in various Indian cities...
http://www.indiamike.com/india/indiamike-meetups-f129/

Also the sources like CS/HC(being a member of both for long time) are a great source to know a country through it's local people by staying with them for free and learning their life rather than living in hotels always and knowing a country through paid tour guides/drivers etc. Also one can avoid touts/scams to a great extent.

Hi!

Hey replayzero,
Right now I'm in Delhi and will be here until April (orginally from US). To be honest I don't really know the city that well, we just got here a few weeks ago. But I would love to get a drink and explore the city. Let me know!

Like I said. I know nothing about Delhi so it would be great to hang out - I think another person on here would also like to come for the ride?

Yup yup sounds good. Hopefully though I will know a bit about the place, but I do doubt it knowing me.

i was like this before gong to Delhi. I instantly liked Delhi on my first visit. Being an Indian and knowing Hindi certainly helped. I was in Delhi for 11 days, i stayed at my uncle's place, that saved quite a bit for me. I traveled by myself, getting around in Delhi was very easy, poeple there were very helpful. I would suggest that you don't miss Qutub Minar, Humayun's tomb and the Jama masjid. These were the monuments i would like to visit any number of times. I found Delhi very clean, for foreigners it would be a different experience but for me, coming from Hyderabad, i felt Delhi to be a much better place to live . People there actually follow the traffic signals, which was quite shocking for me.

I did a lot of reading on India mike which was my basic source of information. The best moment was when i could go to the Mirza Ghalib haveli located in the confusing bylanes of Chandni chowk Chandni chowk. Ghalib's haveli was suggested in the Delhi forum, so finally getting there was quite an achievement as not many in Delhi knew about it.

I felt the same after reading somuch about the place and not actually being there, but finally after i went there i was overwhelmed with the beauty of the city.

My best advice to you is this: Call Sandeep, Delhi's most beautiful taxi man. Theres a story about him if you search Delhi's most beautiful taxi driver.

He's honest, good English and knows Delhi like the back of his hand. Dont try to tip him too much which you will want to do, he wont accept it believe it or not.

His number is 9311743424 and he'll pick you up at the airport.
