From Paharganj to Old Delhi
People in Paharganj normally takes a motorickshaw or a Taxi when they want to visit Old Delhi.
I can suggest a very nice and pleasant walk from Pahargank to Old Delhi. It takes no more than 40 minutes. From Main Bazaar you move left parallel to the Railway Station, the first ten or fifteen minutes are not very exciting, afterwards you reach Sadar Bazaar, is in my opinion like Main Bazaar without guest houses and tourists, plenty of shops and different bazaars in the narrow crossing streets. After Sadar Bazaar you cross a bridge over the tracks with a great ambiance and arrive to Khari Baoli a wide street with the best popular ambiance in Delhi, a very busy street much better in my opinion than Chandni Chowk. You can also visit the Fatehpuri Masjid on the right side of the street. At the end of Khari Baoli the street turn right and you are at the begin of Chandni Chowk, oppossite to the Red Fort. You can then walk to Jami Masjid, the Red Fort or the bazaars and come back by walk to Paharganj, is not very hard, I did it many times. Otherwise you can take a motorickshaw. Enjoy your walk. An alternative-Take the new Metro (get frisked on entry) to Chandi Chowk.Nip into Haldiram's for some refreshment and to recover from being frisked by men with the biggest, blackest moustaches in the world.
Exit Haldiram's and stroll in any direction (if you look left you can see the Jama Masjid if you really must go that way...) Stroll through the REAL Delhi where no one will hassle you at all and there's plenty to gawp at. When you get tired or irretrievably lost, flag down a rickshaw. Growl, "Haldiram's", "Jama Masjid" or "railway station" in your best hindi accent and make your way back. |

Can anyone tell me how far and exactly where is the closest metro point from Paharganj - I presume it would be somewhere close to the New Delhi Railway station, but where will we find it?

Yes the neraest Metro point is New Delhi railway station...
I am sure you would be staying in the Main Bazar, however the metro station is on the other side of the NDLS. |

After a few attempts of walking from Main Bazaar to Old Delhi i finally made it, walking all the way to Jama Masjid. But I was so disoriented and turned around when I tried to make my way back to Main Bazaar that I got lost in a crazy system of tiny alleyways loaded with shops and people. Eventually I found a policeman and asked him to point me to NDRS. He looked at me like I was crazy for wanting to walk all that way (very perceptive man!) but he steered me in the right direction. Whenever I came to a junction I would ask another cop or whoever I could find and they would point me along again. That was one of my best days in Delhi. Just walking in Old Delhi and escaping the madness of main bazaar.

lol...I discovered this accidentally...
...and ended up walking all the way from Paharganj to Khari Baoli (the wholesale spice / pulse / cereal market) and Naya Bazaar.
In fact as I took a walk back.....suddenly I found myself on perhaps the most infamous and colourful street of Delhi, i.e. G.B.Road. Suddenly I saw gaudily dressed women of all shapes and sizes cat calling and inviting me upstairs as they lunged from their 1st / 2nd floor balconies and surely I knew they weren't just offering a cup of tea! ![]()
