Lansdowne is peaceful and serene nothing much to do except walk around and visit a few temples in the place. Lovely blue pine forests to walk in. It is mostly a cantonment town. That is the reason it is so clean and neat and pretty well organised for India.

Kausani - fantastic view of Nanda Devi. Nothing much to do except walking and trekking in and around the area. Got decent hotels. Very quiet and sleepy.

Kanatal - has a spa and several hotels, great view of himalays. Close to Mussoorie and Chamba can visit both while you are there. Easily a days drive from Delhi.

You could consider Uttarkashi. One day's drive from Delhi spend two days here trekking and angling. This time of the year it is serene and quiet. Not too cold during the day and quite a few places to visit.

Hey swamy....4 days is not much time and my personal advice would be to not waste much time in travel. If possible, do take the overnight bus to Nainital from Delhi and then travel to Ranikhet and Kausani. I have been there twice and I love it.

Kausani has some amazing views of the himalayas and it has tea gardens too. There is also the "Anashakti Ashram" where Gandhiji lived for sometime in 1930 and there is a museum of his.

Ranikhet is a nice place to hang out and go for hikes. The Ranikhet Club is a very nice place to stay. It is run by chevron group. Google it and you will find it.

Let me know if you need any more help. Happy holidays.

Oh thanks for the advice guys.. So its Lansdowne for now.. we will be leaving by train (Mussorie Express) on Thursday night... I was wondering whether you have any suggestions for cheap hotels or places to stay. Neither of us have the money or the intention to stay at luxury resorts.. Youth hostels or accommodations under 500 per person are greatly preferred.. Thanks again.

The GMVN has very reasonable rates. Since it is their off season which lasts from 1st Nov to 1 March, you will be entitled to discounts and may get a room for about 400/- a night. The GMVN has really nice big rooms and is close to the market. Food on order and the rooms are decent. There aren't too many hotels etc. there as it is a Cantonment town, construction has been curtailed.

I checked GMVN website for reservation... It seems I cannot reserve for the next three days... I checked for 3 days later just to know the status and it showed that all Economy class rooms are booked... Any other recommendations? Google is of little help since it shows up only luxury resorts..

The GMVN guys are making a lot of money, they always seem to be full...

Same thing happened with us in Oct, but luckily we got an option to stay at (I think) Hotel Mayur near the main chowk.. Nice and simple hotel, surely under your budget and everything is also near by.

There are a 2-3 more budget hotels next to it, so you'll have options to explore...

Best of luck and enjoy ur trip..!!

There are a few more budget hotels one is at the main chowk just above a restaurant on the left of the main entry (auto) to the chowk. On a corner if i remember right. The owner also runs a restaurant and the hotel is above on the first floor over looking the chowk. Canlt remember the name right now. The owner also rents out rooms in his house they are pretty good to you could stay there but it is at some distance. If the economy rooms at GMVN are not available, try the deluxe they should not be too far over your budget either during the off season. Best of Luck

Hi All,

I have to go to Ranikhet / Nainital from Chandigarh. What would be the best, shortest route for the same? Is it via Hardiwar & then?

Come to Delhi and then take the route that all Dilliwallas take...

Kaladungi route would be better to reach Nainital rather than the Haldwani route...

Just looked at the map... Never realised Chandigarh & Haridwar are so close... But from then on, how to reach Nainital...?

I feel Haridwar route can not be the fastest one...

Haridwar - Najibabad - Ramnagar - Nainital

The road is more or less like Moradabad route only.

There is no difficulty upto Yamunanagar from there to Saharanpur & Chhutmalpur is little rough.

Haridwar - Najibabad stretch was also rough, but one of our IMer, Tilak recently traveled on it and he reported it in good condition. Rest of the road is very good and beautiful.

Just returned from Ranikhet & Nainital,

Thanks to Indiamike forum & google maps. While going took the route from Chandigarh - Panchkula - Nahan - Paonta - Derhadun - Haridwar. Night halt at Haridwar. Morning started from Haridwar to Najibabad - Nagina (Had hot Gulab Jamoon in Toolaram Sweet shop) very good - Afzalgarh - Jaspur - Kashipur. Got confused. Asked many, then moved towards Ramnagarh & then through Corbett to Ranikhet.
Next day from Ranikhet to Almora. Did some company works then to Nainital. Stayed over night. Started from Nainital , then to Bazpur via Kaladungi . Then to Kashipur & through the same road to Haridwar & then Chandigarh. The return route was good.
The route from Kashipur via Ramnagar to ranikhet was not that good. Narrow, broken.
But enjoyed the journey. Stayed in Windsor Lodge (Ranikhet) & KMVN (Nainital).

Cheers!!!
