Former street names in New Delhi

In another thread that I was on the point of hijacking I mused about the original street names in Lutyens' New Delhi. I couldn't find any old city map on the net or any list giving new and old names side by side. 20-odd years ago I knew where to get this information. The Indian Embassy at Bonn had old issues of the "Times of India Yearbook" in its library and I just needed to look at a map of Delhi in the 1950 edition. I am making a list out of memory (with the help of my Eicher map). Old New Delhi wallahs please add to the list!

Tees January Marg = Albuquerque Road
Dr. Zakir Hussain Marg = Wellesley Road
Subramaniam Bharati Marg = Cornwallis Road
Janpath = Queen's Way
Rajpath = King's Way
Motilal Nehru Marg = York Road (?)
Maulana Azad Road = King Edward VII Road
Dr. Rajendra Prasad Road = Queen Victoria Road
(or were the last two the other way around?)
Rajaji Marg = King George's Avenue
Amrita Shergil Marg = Ratendone Road
Sardar Patel Marg = Kitchener Road

I see Dalhousie Road and Dupleix Road are still called that, or has that changed in the past few years.

Kasturba Gandhi Marg = Curzon Road
Copernicus Marg = Lytton Road
Tilak Marg = Hardinge Road
Baba Kharak Singh Marg = Irwin Road
Pandit Pant Marg = Queen Mary's Avenue
Dr. Bishambar Das Marg = Allenby Road
Tolstoy Marg = Keeling Road

I see Hailey Road is still called that.

Vivekananda Marg = Minto Road

Pt. Ravi Shankar Shukla Marg - at least the continuation beyond Curzon Road (Kasturba Gandhi Marg) used to be called Canning Lane. The name "Canning Road" is still on the map but part of it seems to be Shrimant Madhav Rao Scindia Marg now.

Rajesh Pilot Marg = South End Road (?)

Golghar, you will need to be on constant alert that your thread doesn't itself become hijacked and converted into yet another Kolkata food thread

But I do know what Lady Canning's Balls are

Quote:
There are also some sweets which has interesting history.. like LEDIKENI- it is said that the wife of Lord Canning (then governal-general of british india, 1856-1862), Lady Cannie had the habit of throwing lavish parties. A few days before her birthday, Lord Canning's men visited the best confectioners of Calcutta and ordered a special sweet to be made in her honour. They wanted an unique sweet in shape-and-size that would outclass them in taste too. It took days for the confectioner to come up with a variety stuffed with saffron & elaichi(cardamom) & fried in ghee(clarified butter) to attain a rich brown colour. It was partially like a pantua & partially like a langcha but very different in taste from them. It was so much appreciated by Lady Canning, that the sweet was named "Ledikeni".

So now I know too. I had an idea of what a pantua* looked like but I had never heard of a langcha before.
In my defence I must confess that I suffer from a metabolic disorder that makes sugar a complete no-no for me.

If this becomes a Kolkata foodie thread I can hijack it once more and turn it into a choo-choo thread. The wikipedia article on langcha linked to above mentions Simultala as a place for langchas. When the Asansol-Kiul line was built Simultala was the highest point on this line and so became an easily accessible health resort for residents of Calcutta. I'm sure it is due for a revival. When travelling from Howrah to Patna by train I used to see several decaying 19th century mansions lining the railway line at Simultala.

*And what is the difference between a pantua and a gulab jamun?

The most obvious difference is the lack of rose-water in the ingredients list of pantua.

I don't know how a Ledikeni was originally made, or what the blogger had tasted, but AFAIK, the terms Ledikeni and Pantua are used interchangeably in present-day Bengal.

Now I am enlightened!
And to prevent this thread from going completely OT (I started it after all) I should like to point out that Bengali Market in New Delhi has nothing to do with Benagal even though the main shop there is called Bengali Sweet House. (The signboard over the side entrance says Bengali Sweets House). It is just a fancy Chaatwala.

Nathu's and Bengali Sweet House are two very old sweet shops of Delhi that are located at Bengali Market. Later on Nathu's expanded in to multi outlet format.

Adding to Jyotida's list two other - Sweets Corner in Sunder Nagar & Annapurna in Kaliash Colony market. I know there are two really old, few generation old Mithai shops in Chawri Bazar/Purani Dilli too, but their names escape my mind.

you will be amazed to find out that Barakhamba Road was still called Barakhamba Road then, as it is speculated that there used to be mosque near Shankar market/ fire station which had twelve Khambas or pillars thus the name of the Road Barakhamba
