My husband and I are visiting Delhi in April and we just wondered if you experienced Indiamike travellers could tell us of your favourite places in Delhi and why.

Railway stations - New Delhi and Old Delhi; Rail Museum; Connaught Place; Janpath; Baba Kharak Singh Marg, Rajpath, Chanakyapuri; Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Marg; Bengali Market, Khari Baoli; Chandni Chowk and the many monuments.

Why ?? Many reasons; nostalgia being one of them.
Whoever said money can't buy happiness didn't know where to shop !

stepmac, might i suggest that you read 'city of djinns' by william dalrymple, an historian, author, traveller.
it is the story of a year he spent living in delhi and mixes the history of delhi with his experiences, including many interviews with people involved with the historical sites he visits.
i found it absolutely compelling, extremely educational and a lure to visit delhi and find these places.

Delhi

I was going to suggest that you read "City of Djinns", too. The trouble with asking people who know Delhi is that they often like things that tourists don't have time for such as the Khan Market bookstores to which I'm addicted (followed by a snack on the terrace of Full Circle). I find the Red Fort very restful after Chandni Chowk. Janpath is great for shopping. I can spend hours just wandering around in the streets south of Rajpath, like Krishna Menon Marg, etc. And don't forget to attend a concert in Nehru Park and go to Lodhi Gardens.

Delhi

Khan Market for Cafe Turtle - Lodhi Gardens for a lovely stroll in a beautiful park - the Red Fort for a look at Old Delhi and the magnificent palaces and museum and a relaxing sit in the gardens - GK1 N Block for shopping and Le Cafe for a bite to eat - India Gate for a sunset view of New Delhi - Habitat Centre for an exhibition and the American Diner.

Would also recommend 'City of Djinns' as an excellent read and I agree that it makes you want to discover more of the city. Still loads to see and visit and I have been here almost 12 months!!!!!

my favourite places lie in south delhi.
it's saket and vasant vihar shopping complexes around PVR Anupam and PVR Priya with good restaurants and cafes (try Yo!China), some discos, supermarkets and wonderful bookshops (visit Mr Ajit Singh in Fact & Fiction).
it's vast sanjay van park behind rockland hospital - the greatest place for jogging and walks even up to ruins of Lal Kot, first capital of Delhi.
it's Nizamuddin Dargah if you after some peace and harmony. Just buy some flowers and green scarves to offer and prepare some change in advance.
also for rest Purana Qila, Qutub Minar and Humayun tomb parks are all good.
for some frenzy market research drive in huge malls in nearby Gurgaon looking like Bandra in Mumbai but without fairy like Intercontinental on the way.
