Fabric in Delhi - for Curtains

Hello everyone -

I've searched the forums but cannot find this same question. I will be shopping in Delhi for a couple of days and I have something very specific in mind. I'm looking for fabric to make curtains. A sold color, very lightweight cotton/linen sheer weave. Is this something you think I could find? Where?

If not.. maybe I should look for curtains themselves. I looked online and fabindia, but didn't see the right thing.

I'll be staying on Janpath and Le Meridien, so stores in that region of the city would be great.
Thanks for your ideas!

Go to the Central Cottage Industries Emporium on Janpath. They have lots of material & employees to work with you(2nd floor I think) on custom made curtains. I got some done there for the living room (Kashmiri cotton with wool embroidery) that are top quality. If they don't have what you are looking - just ask them and they will point you in the right direction, I'm sure.

Thank you.

I have heard "Cottage Industries" mentioned many times, I hope it is close enough to walk to.. I'm going to look at a map now.

It's on the corner of Janpath and Tolstoy Marg, very close to the Imperial Hotel (just the place for a cool drink after a hard day of fabric shopping!)

Another possibility is the group of individual State Emporia on Baba Kharak Singh Marg, also within walking distance of the Central Cottage Industries Emporium. Lots of these shops also have fabrics.

Hi,

Try Sarojini Nagar, they have a material section and some great ready made curtains.

About 4 years ago I bought reasonably priced and good quality furnishing fabric at Jagdish Stores in Karol Bagh. I also bought a lot of reasonably priced ready made cotton curtains in Sarojini market, there is a basement store for export surplus furnishings there that was pretty good, they had a lot of sheer fabric curtain panels some with Marks and Spencers labels on them. Dont know if they are still there.

Fab India GK N Block Market Has a large home furnishings section.
They also have inhouse tailors if you require your stitching to be done.

God i am so sick of everyone recommending Central Cottage Industries Emporium , its not the ONLY place and definitely not the best...

Curtain fabrics i would recommend Fab which has a store in Khan Market, Great Kailash , Vasant Kunj (or Vihar) and maybe even 1 in CP.

There's also Home saaz in Lajpat Nagar and Sarojni also has a good range. All 3 offer ready made curtains as well..though i am not sure how well that would work for you..

One has shopped personally at all 3 places , the most recent being Home Saaz in Lajpat...

puchoo, the OP is only in town for 2 days and is staying on Janpath. Therefore CCIE & Baba Kharak Singh emporia are not only the most strategic from a logistics point of view but they also tend to have a more thorough inventory representation of what textile handiwork is available nationally or state-by-state even. They also are extremely helpful in providing contacts, addresess of their suppliers or, in the event you don't find what you are looking for, pointing you towards shops in the region that will suffice your specific needs.

No, certainly not the only ticket in town but it may be, if anything else, the best jumping off or starting point for the uninitiated seeker who only has a small window of time.

Thumbs up Thank you!

Actually, I am in town 17 May - 29 May, but I will be working almost every day. I'm taking a quick day trip to the Taj on 18 May. I can shop Sunday morning 25 May and then all day 28 May. So.. I'm just trying to make the most of my snatches of time. And if I don't find anyone else among my coworkers who want to visit the same shops.. I don't want to end up too far from my hotel.

I'd love to explore more markets and shops as time allows, I just know this is one thing I would love to bring home from India.

Lightweight sheer pure linen fabric in natural/offwhite is available at Sachdeva's in Nehru Place. They also stock some checks and stripes in the same weight linen.
The width available all the time is - 46"to47"inches {115-120cm}
Price is - Rs.100 to 150.( this is an excellent price as they supply trade).
I do not have the address but will try and get it for you and post it later but their tel no is: +91 11 26442259.

Nehru Place is about 30 minutes by car from Janpath.

At Khan market there is a shop called Delhi Cloth House which carries some linens but they are really shirt/dress weight.

Finally there is Linen Club behind Bikaji Kamaji Place just off the Ring Road but they tend to be a bit on the expensive side. I am told they also have a shop in Nehru Place but I have not been to it yet.
Hope this is of help.
